Whats this Lappy worth?

Hey guys,

I was talking to my cousin just a while ago, and he says he has a laptop he doesnt want. He wants me to put a price on it. Whats it worth? I mean, is it even worth anything?

Specs:
Toshiba Sattelite
AMD K6-2 475Mhz
64mb of RAM
4 gig HD
Dead Battery, but has power cord so it still turns on.
Windows XP Pro

I am suprised he was able to get XP pro onto this laptop, with 64mb of RAM. You all might think I am stupid for even looking into this laptop, but I just want something to mess around with. I finally got my Ubuntu Linux cd's, and I might want to install it onto this laptop. I cant remember what size screen. I forgot. I would ask him, but he is not online right now. It may have been a 12 or 14 maybe? Not sure.
One thing that makes me not want it is the dead battery, which another would cost around 70 dollars. But I just want to play with it.

I think it would be a 14". You'd be looking at probably $50 - $100 AUD for it. It's quite old. It would also run like crap with XP Pro on it. I'm having problems running it on a similar desktop but with a 10GB hdd.

I'd offer $20 considering the cost of the new battery and the puny hard drive.

I think he really wants me to buy it, because was telling me that XP runs "very fast" on it. He said he had Windows ME, and he formatted it, and put Linux SUSE. Then he reformatted again, and put XP Pro. That is a tiny HD though, only a 4 gig. Funny thing is, he thinks the laptop is worth a lot. He was trying to sell it at the flea market for 350. :disgust: Then he said he went down to 250 and someone was "interested" in it and they never came back for it. And what really makes me laugh is, he traded a 30gig iPod for it!!

EDIT: Ok, I dont want it anymore. He just got online a couple of minutes ago. I told him 30 bucks, and he got pissed and said no. I explained to him that the laptop wasnt worth much because of the tiny HD and the dead battery, plus how old the damn thing is, and he doesnt want to listen. He said he could probably get 200 bucks off of it. Whatever.

Yea, he might be able to. People at flea markets will buy anything. A guy paid 185 bucks for a Pentium 2 350. Just the tower itself!! Thats ridiculous.

He would sure show me if he sold it!! lol

it all depends on how much you can convince somebody to buy it...my friend once had a pII that sold for $200. But, considering your laptop has low ram, low speed, puny HD with no battery, it'd probably sell for <$50. There are some local laptop shops that maybe willing to buy it.

OR

You could just donate it and get a tax refund or something.

But It may not run a crappy as you think on XP
I had a ThinkPad 600 P2 233Mhz and 64Mb Ram and 4GB HD and the darn thing ran pretty fast
A little slow boot up, but once up I was amazed how good it ran.

Well, the laptop isnt mine. Its my cousins. He thinks its worth a lot though.

eriqesque, thanks for sharing that. Maybe my cousin wasnt lying after all. It does have a 475mhz processor, so maybe it will be a little fast. Another thing that made me not want his laptop is NO ETHERNET!! Only a modem. It does have 1 or 2 PCMCIA slots though, so I may be able to add one of those cards.
