These are the new Dempsey cores by Intel, They are priced pretty well.

In 1000 Unit Qauntities.

5050 198US 3.00GHZ/667FSB/2x2MB Competitor = Opteron 248

5060 316US 3.20GHZ/1066FSB/2x2MB Competitor = Opteron 265
5080 850US 3.73GHZ/1066FSB/2x2MB Competitor = Opteron 280

I don't see any supporting motherboards, do you?

and that's where Xeons suck hard, limited to server usage, out of enthusiasts reach.

I'd buy a Xeon today if I can find a desktop motherboard for < $200

yeah, one of the smartest things AMD did was to release the optys in the 939 socket in addition to the 940

Was it? AMD later needed to raised prices on their Opter 1xx Series so it wouldn't canibalize the Athlon 64/Athlon 64x2 sales.

Nah, releasing S939 opertons wasn't a big deal, it only mattered to a small number of overclockers.

I'm talking about from the consumers point of view

Then why did AMD implement their only Authorized retailers can buy them now, if it wasn't a big deal. To me it seems their actions warrants it as something that must have been important to AMD if they were so worried and basically erased the Opteron 1xx pricing pages from their picing lists on their website.

That's fine, but that doesn't in the least bit negate my point, it's a debatable issue. Things that are great for us on deals are usually bad in cost for them. Thanks for clearing up what you meant though.

Because why would AMD want anyone giving them less money then they could get, even if its only a small minority, its still profitable to milk them for all its worth.

i agree about the opterons at s939.
my opty 165 can easily OC is 2.6 stable so the opterons are really good chips. also the 2 mb l2 makes sure that if i need to i have a fx-60 instead of a nuitered fx-60 that you get when you buy x2's (i think even the 5000+ has only 1 mb l2)
