The upgrade you're talking about is risky at best. It isn't supported by the manufacturer and requires some hex-editing in order to do it. I don't recommend it at all. Stick only to firmware upgrades from your manufacturer unless you're feeling really ballsy. If you are, search around and see if there are any sort of upgrades for your particular CD-R drive, although I've only seem two, Hewlett packard had one where you could flash a 2x to a 4x drive and the IOMega 12x drives, you could upgrade the firmware with the plextor firmware, if you did some hex-editing.
