just wondering about something . i upgraded my vid card . the wifey bought me a 8800gt for fathers day . i was using an 8600gt . i have an amd 4000 single core . im aware that it may be a little inadequate for the new jump to the 8800 . im gettin some screen lock up whe im playing my games . crysis, lost planet, fear . either when the vid card is over clocked or using stock settings . temp isnt a problem because i never go above 70c loaded . i do have my processor c'd to 3.0 ghz . just curious if my processor is "bottlenecking" my vid card, and causing my problems . thanx in advance for the help .

It wouldn't bottleneck it to the point your screen freezes, when people talk about bottleneck is the video card not having enough bandwidth to use all of it's potential.

If your screen locks up it's a problem which could be one of the following:

1. Drivers, uninstall your current drivers, restart and install the latest drivers from nvidia.

2. Card is not installed properly, it might not be all the way into the slot, best way to install new hardware is not unplug the computer from the power cord, ground it by pressing the power button and then install the video card making sure it's all the way into the slot.

3. Reset BIOS settings to default might be worth a try.

4. The 8800GT you have might be faulty, if you can check it on a different system and see if it locks up there too.

Forget "bottlenecking". Stupid term, and certainly not the cause of lock-ups.

Lock-ups and freezing could be either software or hardware problem. Please list full system specs.

Software - PeteRoy has already mentioned drivers, OS and unpatched games can also come into this category. More likely, though is hardware.

Hardware - PeteRoy has mentioned a fault 8800GT, but even a perfect 8800GT could be too much strain on your PowerSupply. Also, your OCed processor could be unstable (check using stress test programs), or memory starting to go flakey.

Yes, like they've said: bottleneck doesn't create system instability.
I guess you either have a bad videocard or the 4000+ at 3 ghz it's not stable. The PSU could be to blame too, if it's weak enough.

Bottleneck= your video card's performance is being slowed down by the speed of your CPU, or vice versa.

Out of curiosity, are you the same person as "Nemesis1"? You have an incredibly similar writing style.

The answer would have to be "no possible way". ;)

You left out the power supply - which is possibly very relevant. What power supply do you have?

Found your problem.

(In all seriousness I'm rather amazed your computer is still running... I would bet $5 that this thing is causing the problem.)

+1

Get yourself a good quality power supply. Newegg is running some specials on a few Antec units, I just picked up an Earthwatts 430 for $30 AR. Great PSU for the $$.
