What's this about a short-lived P4 (Willamette) socket???

I have caught bits an pieces about the upcoming P4 being released in a new pin layout (socket) which is not compatable with current socket 370 sockets. To make things worse, I gather that Intel plans to replace this upcoming P4 socket by 2nd half 2001 with yet another socket layout. Can anyone confirm this? If this is true, why the heck would Intel create such a short-lived socket? Can't even find the business sense behind this one... Any thoughts?

Intel will indeed be releasing the P4 in a new socket format. The P4 will have a short lifespan, however, as Intel will be releasing its successor in late H1 or early H2 2001, which will have another new socket interface.

Just a note- The P4 was never designed to be compatible with the cuurent generation cpu's (P3, C2). It is a whole new design, requiring a different chipset etc
