What's There To Do In San Bernardino, CA?

I'm flying to the Ontario airport in California to visit a relative who lives nearby in one of the distant desert suburbs of LA, from Saturday to Wednesday. I get the impression that he does not want to go to the city that much so we will probably see some nearby stuff. What's there to do around there? Is the public transportation good, because he works during the daytime.

Great food! go rent and car and drive around

san bernandino is pretty much a HUGE chinatown.. heck even the street names are in chinese

drive to Cabazon outlets or the Great Mall in Ontario.

other than that, it's a small city.

oh wait, there's a go-kart place around there too.... but I forgot the name... PR Performance or something like that.

I wasn't really too fond of San Bernardino when I would visit for work. It was hot and dirty and sorta reminded me of the worst parts of my hometown. Except instead of parts of it being bad, it all seemed bad.

There's a big mall in Ontario that was pretty sweet, and I'm pretty sure there was a bunch of restaurants in that general vicinity too. The mall is huge and IIRC it's signed and visible from the freeway.

I'm curious if any locals can convince me it doesn't suck...

edit: spelling

I don't watch the local sports teams here, so I'm probably not going to watch an away team that I know nothing about. 😕

Columbus has lots of that. It's hard to find a more malled city.

Are there any nice national/state parks nearby? I'd like to see some mountains and cacti, which are not common here in Ohio.

Go up to Big Bear. It will be cooler and much cleaner.

San Burdo & Riverside get ALL of LA/Orange counties' pollution. I don't like going into
the "Inland Empire," as it's called.

I just returned from my trip. I had a nice time. I had already seen a lot of the tourist stuff in the city of LA on a previous trip in 2000. My uncle lives in Rancho Cucamonga, which I must say has the stupidest name of any town I've ever heard in my life, but is actually a rather nice place. I wouldn't mind living there myself. Many of the nearby towns aren't so nice though.

Here's what I did:

Saturday: Flew in. Saw Victoria Gardens. Went to Pasadena at night.
Sunday: Went to Temecula to go wine tasting. Good tour of the Inland Empire. Drove halfway up a mountain near Rancho at night (it got dark and we chickened out).
Monday: Went to see Redlands and Loma Linda. Went to Hollywood and Highland in the evening.
Tuesday: Took the train into the city. Went to Hollywood and Universal City.
Wednesday: Took the train into the city. Went to Little Tokyo and Beverly Hills (which was a bitch to reach by public transportation. As you go from train to subway to bus, the crowd gets increasingly shabby, from office workers to hot and sweaty non-English speaking Mexicans.) I would not recommend riding the bus in LA.

Had a nice time overall. I like the desert and mountains, and the air is good for my allergies. Would possibly like to live in Inland Empire in future, if not for high real estate costs.

i could have told you that - never ride the bus in LA unless you have to or it's not that long of a distance.

before I had my car I took the bus for a year or so. (commute between Monterey Park to Pasadena, and to Pomona once in a while. Also took a bus once to Pepperdine)
It wasn't that scary.
