did a faceplant on a gravel road while riding my 85 CR 80 when I was 15. top speed, loose gravel, made it to a curve, bike started to slide. i panicked, hit the front brakes, flew over the handlebars and did a face/hands slide for about 20 feet.

open face helmet, no gloves........

could see the bones in the palms of both hands, fractured my wrist, lots of gravel stuck in my face. good times.

walked to a farmer's house with my buddy's help, he didn't want to let us in at first but did eventually (i was bleeding everywhere). he led me to his bathroom and had me dunk my face in hot salt water, and my knees went wobbly from the pain. then my Dad showed up and bitched me out all the way to the hospital. still have a decent scar on my chin and one on the side of my nose.

I've broke quite a few bones - fingers, hands, wrists, collarbones.

The most pain I've ever been in was a football game that I played through with both quads strained and toe injuries that resulted in the loss of both big toe nails. That was pure misery and I could barely walk for few days after that.

That was actually worse than my kidney stone last year.

Relatively lucky.

My injuries revolve around sports. My worst was probably a bad hamstring pull during a meaningless indoor 4x400 the weekend before conference in college. We ran it for endurance training. I come around the back corner and it felt like somebody pushed me from behind and I do a face plant on the track. Then it felt like a giant cramp in the middle of my right thigh. I was out for a solid 2 months. All I could do for the most part was gimp walk it until late March. This happened in the middle of Feb. By the time Spring ball came around in the 2nd week of April I was able to run for the most part though it felt heavy. By our Spring game in the last weekend of April I didnt even feel it. I attribute my recovery that to being 20 years old and in the best shape of my life. And having a dedicated training staff that made me go through the paces to recovery. If I was avg joe with that kind of injury. It would had taken me many more months to get over, if ever.

fractured wrist, sprained ankle

I'm too much of a coward to do stupid stuff to hurt myself.

Second degree burns on my right wrist as a kid. Doctors considered doing a skin graft from my ass. Had to go to the hospital for over a week to change the gauze/dressing daily.

I broke my arm when some kid kicked it while I was going for a ball playing dodgeball in gym. This was back in grade school, and while it was a minor thing compared to shit I've gotten into since then, I remember it as being the worst thing to happen to me ever.

me: quite naive 18 yr old drunk driving (me - 0.25bal yes I know... I'm lucky to be alive and I did not seriously injure anyone else. The other driver was OK and his car was totalled and compensated)

WIth said 0.25bal, I was estimated to have been traveling at 75mph. I drove into the guardrail separating the freeways. Car flipped went cruising on the roof. Another car came along and could not avoid, we came to rest against the guardrail. 3 hours later and I'm in an ambulance to the hospital. Jaws of life and everything.

Broken pelvis, broken ankle - left foot, broken elbow left arm. severed thumb left hand. Only thumbtip remained attached. Doctors used bone from the second toe on my right foot and muscle from the same area to reconstruct a left thumb.

2 months in traction. 6 months until walking normally and able to work.

I did something similar, flipped a gokart on a gravel road. Wasn't so bad, but I still have lots of little scars (most people can't even see) from all the gravel that was either embedded in my face or cut my face up.

there's not a lot of "give" in gravel roads is there? :D

Worst for me was a hockey injury at age ~13. Took a stick coming back for a slap right to the face. Broken nose and decent cut on the face. I've never seen so much blood in my life.

about 10 years ago i played in a tournament where one of the defencemen on our team went down to block a shot... face first. he got it right in the chiclets. man was that ugly... i still remember him eating soup later that day because he couldn't chew anything..... omg. broken teeth... AHH still makes me cringe. to this day, i still don't know what he was thinking going down to block like that. FEET first, not face :)

oh and props to Maltby for going down in front of an Ovechkin shot the other night... WITHOUT a helmet! fearless much?

dunno if it qualifies, but I used to get allergy shots. One day, I had a systemic reaction where my lungs and throat were closing up and the nurses said I didn't have the 3 minutes it would take to walk across the street to the hospital before I would have been dead. They pulled me into the back, shot me up with a fucking giant needle full of adrenaline and crammed this breathing tube into my mouth with this junk evaporated into the mist I was breathing that would relax and open my airways. Never been within 3 minutes of death before, it was an experience.

When I was about 8 or 9 I got a new Mad magazine at the store. I was so excited as I ran out the store, I did not even notice the crisp pages. Damn paper sliced me down right to the 2nd or 3rd epidermis layer. Blood was everywhere.

When I was a toddler, I fell on a hatchet. Yeah, stupid parents left it next to the woodstove. It cut all the way through my upper lip. Parents had to drive me 40 miles to the nearest hospital, where there just happened to be a good plastic surgeon available. I have a very faint scar that you can only see if you get really close and the light is just right. Of course, I don't remember that incident.

Sprained ankle is the most painful injury I've had that I can remember. I've done that 3 times over the course of about 10 years of playing recreational volleyball.

I've also broken my wrist, a finger, and one of my ribs. But none of the breaks were as bad as the ankle sprains.
