What's the worst repair estimate you've received?

Went in to Tempe Dodge in AZ to get my 2002 Dodge Stratus oil changed... Now I know you'll probably say, "going to the dealer for an oil change?" My car is a piece of shit, and has had the whole A/C system, Transmission control module, engine, radiator, and thermostat all in the last 2 1/2 years. This car ONLY has 73,300 miles. Now with the new engine, I need to make sure I keep a nice record of all my oil changes WITH the dealer, just in case they try to screw me over on my 3 year warranty.

Anyways I go in for an oil change, and come back out with an estimate for $780 to replace my rear upper left control arm module.

I'm just laughing about this because I went in for an oil change, and they just had to look for some other imperfections to make a sale. He said they will need "quick attention."

I know it's the recession and all, but give me a break. I have this other mechanic who runs his own shop. He's great and is completely honest about what actually needs to be replaced. That is the difference though, corporate fools need to create rules for the service advisers to drive sales.

Last time my friend called into Midas to get an oil change, they quoted him like $2300+ for fix a leaky oil pan, and all sorts of other bullshit.

600 for rear brake job on Mazda3 from dealer. Did it myself for about $40 in parts 🙂

i came in for an oilchange at the dealer in a pinch, and they fucked up putting my tires back on for rotation, screwed up my rotors, and wanted to charge $350 to replace.. a quick call to american honda dropped that down to $30. pissed off that it wasn't free, but whatever.

I just got back from the dealer with my car..... I asked specifically for them to put 5W-30 in and they put 10W-30 in.. The guy never bothered to ask me if that was ok.

went in to goodyear for what I assumed was a slipped belt on my tire. Turns out it was a dragging caliper which required another caliper, breaks, rotor, and of course, they want to do both sides for the amazing low price of $680.xx

I already had the wagner ceramic brakes.

I went to advance for the $15.99 rotor and O'reilly's for the $49.99 rebuilt caliper ($80.00 core charge), and did it myself in about 40 minutes.

I had my two rear tires replaced, then about 400 miles later took it to Lithia for my free lifetime oil change service. Lube guy noted on my free 15 point inspection that all 4 tires needed attention. I lold, then told the service adviser to get his fucking mechanic in line.

Other than that, I've had no major estimates.

I was quoted $160 to recharge the AC in my car (just charge..no vacuum).

I went to 'my' mechanic back up north...had my AC system vacuumed, recharged, 4 wheel alignment, outer tie rod ends and steering rack boots installed for $140.

$5000 for a blown '90 BMW manual transmission w/ 200k miles on it. More that the car was worth. I got $3500 for Push, pull, or drag.

I went to skips tire a few weeks ago to get new front breaks after they quoted me 250 for the job + 75 per break rotor the previous day. After taking the breaks apart they call me and tell me that the rotors need to go but now want to charge me 150 dollars per rotor after previously quoting me 75. I tell the guy i had already been quoted 75 and he feeds me this BS line about how all he can offer me is what is in the warehouse, and that it changes everyday. I tell him that if he tries to put 150 dollar rotors on I'm only giving him 75 bucks. He then says I'll call you back while he checks with the warehouse. He calls back less than 20 seconds later saying that magically the warehouse now has them for 75. As if he could check anything in 20 seconds. The ass hat was just trying to rip me off.
