What's the worst PSU you have managed to run a 6800, 7800, X1800 or X1900 on stable?

Seeing how a lot of gamers use cheap Dells or the like or are like me and stuck with the cheap 450 watt no name PSU that came with a $45 case and delivers only 18A on the 12V rail.

My friend actually got 2 7800 GTxs to run in SLI in a case like mine stable with no issues. I seriously doubt a X1900XT or a 7900GT will run stable in my system, but will be trying it first in a few months and only upgrading the PSU if I must.

I always try to get the most performance out of the least amount of money despite any risks. Getting good FPS out of a $400 self built system and overclocking to the hilt is more satisfying to me then spending lots of money for the highest tier gear.

I ran a 6600GT and a 9800 pro on a 380w nonname psu with 8A on the 12v rail...

EDIT: it blew up eventually when i added a SB Live! 24bit, mid playing d3 :D But only after about three years of operation...

I ran a 6800 GT on a "Future Power 400W" power supply (15A 12V line, came with a case I got in 2002) for about seven months and never had a problem. Although that was on an Athlon XP, which I think run off the 5V line and allow for more headroom on the 12V.

The one problem with this PSU is that it's incredibly loud for some reason. I never thought power supplies could be that loud until I saw this one.

Actually started a thread today in CPU about how test the 12V rail with a multimeter.

My Coolmax 400 watt has 18A on the 12V rail. According to Asus PC Probe it idles at 11.9 and under 2 instances of prime95 it hits 11.5V.

I want to upgrade to at least an X800XT or 7800GS level card from my 9600XT and I'm not sure it'll handle it.

Anyone want to recommend a decent PSU for a Skt 478 Prescott system?

I'm thinking maybe a 520 OCZ modstream.

9500pro on an "advanced" PSU with noise killer and one 80mm cooling fan......375watts

on a rig with a palomino AXP chip, 2 HDD's it started to struggle at boot up, often only spinning one drive up

HTPC using 300w (Athenatech A100 case and Ahanix mATX SilenX PS) with ATi x800 GTO PCIe and Opteron 146 @2.7GHz. Works perfect. Also has to power DVB-S card and LNB with motor.

Edited to correctly show actual power supply tested.

Thanks for making me look.....
Turns out, I forgot that I swapped power supplies in that PC.
It has Ahanix SilenX 300w mATX power supply (Still FSP group).
Didn't measure 12v line, but sticker shows 16A.

Original power supply that did everything (except never tested the x800 in it, so it kills this thread) was Sparkle (FSP Group) with sticker showing 10a on 12v line. Both original 220w and Ahanix 300w power supplies are identical internally, except the Ahanix has larger heatsinks and SilenX fan.

Note that the x800 does NOT have additional power connector like many other cards do.
All power is supplied by PCIe slot.

X1900XT

Enermax Liberty 620w

The 620w Liberty is way overkill but I quite sure that I'll never worry about my PSU again.

Edit: missed the "worst" part. Stil thats the worst PSU I have run my X1900XT on, it also the best one too. :)

A couple of years ago I ran the following hardware off of a 95W PSU :) with no problems:

P4 1.6A overclocked to 2.4 GHz
Stock Intel HS/F
Radeon 9200
D-link PCI wireless card
Maxtor 120G 7200 RPM hd
Lite-on CD burner

I am currently running a bobo brand PSU since my OCZ took a dump. I picked up a Dynex PSU from Best Buy, made in China, loud fan, but stable 3.3v rail, which is more than I can say for my OCZ.

I'm using an Antec TPII 380W with an Opteron 148 @ 2.85Ghz, DFI NF4 MB, 2GB RAM, Sapphire X1900 XTX, 2x300GB 7200rpm Seagate drives and an Asus DVD-RW. Two 120mm fans are spinning in there as well. Amazingly, it works just fine with all rails stable under load - and it's quiet too. I got this PS with a Sonata I case.

I have coolmax 400w. check my sig! 12v is at 11.85 idle and 11.6-7 full load.
