I bought a Navigon 5100 GPS because Navigon makes the software for other folk, and it has real time traffic updates.

It's a massive POS, my ~$100 bottom of the line Magellan is better at everything :|

Figured I'd rant about it since I'm downloading the 2nd software update this month for it, I hope to hell it fixes the routing.

Probably the best purchase I've made in the last 12 months. Bought an HD-A2 from Wal-Mart on Nov. 2, returned it April 30th for a full refund. Now XBOX 360 HD-DVD players are like $30, and work just fine with any Windows PC, I still feel stupid for buying one of those too earlier for like $150

this. It died after a month. Shoulda spent the extra ~$15 (with shipping) and gotten an X10 module.

Not really a gadget, but I bought a magnetic towel rack for my fridge (I'm in a dorm). Adhesive on the magnets wore off after a couple of weeks, and the magnets themselves don't seem up to the challenge.

my wife bought one of those plastic lensed meat thermometers. You are supposed to check at time intervals and not leave it in the roast ...sure lets keep opening the oven, lose the heat and dry out the meat.

I fixed that with a trip to Bed Bath and Beyond.

i just bought another one

I now own 3. An HD-A2 and 2 HD-30s. Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't. ;)

One HD-30 was free, after the $50 HD refund gift card from BB, plus tax and a $20 2 year service policy.
And I used the $50 gift card from BB to buy The Shining, 2001, Clockwork Orange and Forbidden Planet on HDDVD this morning, in fact. For $14.99 each on sale online at BB. Oh, the sweet irony.

And I have won a lot of cheap HDDVD Ebay auctions lately, too. Best deal so far was getting 2 HDs NEW for $11.37 shipped. Take that, b00-way! I got over 100 titles on HD now. But I also have nearly 800 SD DVDs, so I also wanted good upconversion. Which the HD Toshibas provide flawlessly.

Wait. I thought this thread was about the worst gadget we bought in the last 12 months?

That would have to be these Tripp lite Omni900LCD

The 2 I bought both utterly failed to hold a charge after about 8 months of continuous use on 2 PCs. Of course, I got them for $99 each and free shipping off Buy.com. But is that a reasonable amount of time for a UPS battery to function? I need to send them back before the warranty expires, too. They are supposedly not user serviceable, to make it even more problematic to replace the battery. I also noticed they appear to have removed this UPS model off their factory website. I wonder why??? :p

The X10 devices are actually the same devices that radio shack used to sell called Plug N power. they are pretty reliable and good, but they cost a pretty penny.
Those clappers for one can only be used with one device and only be turned on and off with loud noises...which is a big minus.

Pharos 250 GPS for 150 - terrible - so few POIs (replaced w/ a Garmin C550 & this is incredible) - on the upside, I sold it locally for 175.
Cingular 8525 used on CL for 200 - worked for about 4 months, then started getting no GSM error. now it's a brick

Also a Navigon GPS. The fucking thing told me to make a hard left turn in the middle of a bridge.
