the larger picture of what transpired on the evening of May 14, 1995, is essentially undisputed. David Moody, then fourteen years old, and his cousin, Kenneth Moody, discovered a young couple alone in a relatively deserted area of Perry County. The two Moodys, acting to carry out a plan to engage in sexual relations with the female half of the couple, Robbie Bond, approached the couple and Kenneth proceeded to beat and stab her male companion, William Hatcher, until he was unable to resist. Bond was also beaten and thrown into the floorboard of the truck driven by the Moodys. After throwing Hatcher's body into the back of the truck, the Moodys transported the couple to Kenneth Moody's trailer where they dug a deep pit to dispose of Hatcher's apparently lifeless body. Kenneth then proceeded to accomplish his original purpose by raping Bond. According to the State, David Moody also raped Bond at that time

In all events, the cousins subsequently bound Bond and, leaving her at the trailer, returned to the scene of the original abduction and attempted to destroy any evidence of what had transpired. After returning to Kenneth Moody's trailer, the Moodys forced a running water hose down the young woman's throat in a ghastly attempt to kill her by drowning. This attempt was apparently unsuccessful, since there was testimony that Kenneth Moody proceeded to violently strike Bond in the head with some object before throwing her into the same pit holding the body of her companion, William Hatcher.

CLIFF NOTES
1. moody and his cousin kidnapped a guy and his girlfriend
2. raped them both
3. killed the girl via putting a hose pipe down the throat and turning it on (attempted, had to improvise when it failed)

When I lived up in Washington, my apartment was probably about 10 miles or so from the Green River Killer. He wasn't caught until recently.

Just yesterday, about 7 miles away, a guy went to an IN HOME daycare and killed every person there and was not caught

The NightStalker Richard Ramirez. I remember people being REALLY scared when all that was going on. Making sure everything was locked at night.

Yeah, up here in WA we have some pretty impressive serial-killer stats, between the GRK (almost certainly the most prolific in US history, with 48 confessed murders and likely hundreds more), and Ted Bundy.

We also have some really ghastly numbers in terms of child molestation, and I prosecuted a guy who was likely the worst sex offender in the history of the Air Force here in WA - he got life in prison and a Dishonorable Discharge.

When I saw this thread, the Green River Killer was the first thing that came to mind. Given that I'm originally from Eastern WA, I could also mention Barry Loukitis (who wasn't really a criminal mastermind so much as a Columbine precursor, but still).

Actually only one person died, but it was definitely a pretty awful crime. It sounds like the two women who were shot may not make it, either - terrible stuff.

Were you living there when his brother Steven was abducted? That was a hell of a scary story itself.

Geez, I had never heard of him (Steven). I just Googled his name and this showed up. That bastard only got 5 years in jail for that. He should have been the one to die in a car wreck.

That really is pretty extraordinary, since Kenneth Parnell molested Steven countless times over a seven-year period before Steven managed to free a second boy he had abducted. The old bastard will spend the rest of his life in prison, after he was convicted earlier this year of trying to buy a child. And to think many people don't understand why child molesters are dangerous even after they're no longer sexually virile . . .

Some guy killed his entire family in my town in '78 or something, and wasn't found until 20 years later. Left them all dead in the house and just disappeared. If I heard the name I'd remember.

To bad it took so long. Hope he rots.

Hmm, in my area? There was only one murder here (that I know of), and that was an isolated dispute over a Chinese restaurant. So, I can't say any criminals came out of my small town.

Jesus... That is awful. I typically am against capital punishment, but stuff like that sways me (especially in light of his arrest this year, as DonVito mentioned).

Ugh.

Ugh.

From CNN, reporting on his 2004 trial:

Parnell was arrested in January 2003 after a woman, Diane Stevens, went to police and said he tried to persuade her to bring him a young boy for $500. He was charged with solicitation to commit a crime, trying to buy a human being and attempted child-stealing.

Defense attorney Deborah Levy painted her client as an aging man who sought to take in an abandoned child. She urged jurors not to presume him guilty because of his past crimes.

Stevens knew Parnell through one of her brothers, now dead. She testified Monday that Parnell called her in December 2002 with a request for a child. "I was shocked," she said. "I think all I said was, 'A boy? A boy!"'

Stevens said Parnell asked for an English-speaking black boy, between ages 4 and 6, and said he would need a birth certificate to enroll the child in school.

Stevens also said Parnell, using a more graphic term, requested that the child have a clean bottom. In his opening statement, Wellman said the request indicates Parnell was interested in something more than simply raising a child.

"This suggests a more lurid and lustful purpose for the defendant to obtain a helpless 4-year-old," the prosecutor said.

Levy told jurors there is an innocent explanation for the request -- "that he wanted a child who was clean."

Stevens cooperated with police in making tape recordings of Parnell and setting up the pretend "delivery" of a child, which led to Parnell's arrest.

TV reports said the cops could tell the neighbors were concealing something, but were hoping a reward might loosen some tongues.

Hmmm, I don't know, there's more to this, but what could the neighbors be hiding? I mean we're talking about beating a kid to death and shooting the place up.

Interesting case, that. The involvement of his wife was unusual, particularly since she, IIRC, gave her teenage sister to him as a "Christmas present," to be raped and ultimately killed. The wife turned state's evidence and got off with a very light sentence as I recall.
