what's the use of the square 12v psu cable

One of the power cable from the psu to mobo is the square 4 pin 12V one I think...
I accidentally booted up the comp without plugging this in, it works... Is it actually useful, I got an nforce2 athlon mobo by the way...

It provides extra 12v power to motherboards/cpu's that need it. If there is the connection on the motherboard, it's best to plug it in. It was originally only on P4 boards, but I have seen a couple of AMD boards with this power connector :)

I guess there's no harm in doing that...
But It detracts from having a cableless case when viewed from a side perspex window, as this slot is all the say on the left in my mobo...

Dell's Poweredge 400SC has the power supply w/ the plug but the mobo doesn't have it... oh well!
