What's the use of the file in a Swiss Army Knife?

I never understood this. Is this to file your nails into claws incase you're lost in the woods or something and need to depend on yourself to hunt?

FOR FILING THINGS
ANYTHING

I'm sure if you were in the Swiss Army you'd use it all the time. Just like that one for getting stones out of horses' hooves.

I'm sure MacGyver would know what to do with it.

The rest of us just aren't at that level of thinking yet :(

I used mine to file burrs off of wood/metal/etc. Works pretty well too. People that carve love swiss army knives.

You file down the contacts on the bomb's trigger device so that when the timer goes off the bomb doesn't explode.

It's for filing your nails instead of biting them off.

More importantly though, the flat head screwdriver at the tip of the file is a PERFECT fit for use as a punch down tool in a Bell 50 wiring block.

Mine has a screw driver tip at the end of the file. Never use the latter, but when my nails start growing in wierd shapes and catches onto things, it's the best file I own...

It could sharpen a metal rod, fish hook, etc.

You probably need to understand survival first, then critique the tools.

A swiss army knife is better than nothing, but not the tool for the job really.

Well, i picked up a couple of Leatherman, and was comparing them with the Swiss, when that came to mind. These are the 2 i picked up:
Leatherman Charge TTI
Leatherman 502

Apparently you have never had a hang nail. They are worse than paper cuts. Especialy when they catch on your clothes. Add being in he middle of the woods without a nail file, you are screwed.
