My friend is taking a course where they teach you that 1+1 does not equal 2. This like that. Whats the point behind it

a few diff operators on of which is + otherwise known as "or"

0 + 0 = 0
0 + 1 = 1
1 + 0 = 1
1 + 1 = 1

So stupid. So basically they are teaching you something that goes against everything they have ever taught you in school. Basically if i had a test in another subject and added wrong like 1+1=2 and they checked it as a wrong answer. I could argue that its correct

No, no, no.

The '+' operator is a logical OR, not addition in the common sense.

edit: 1+1 in binary = 10

i took a logic course my sophomore year in college, and at first, seeing 1 + 1 = 1 was kind of wierd. but you quickly get used to the boolean math as well as the other operators too.

but unless you said it was a logical math class, then yea, 1+1 = 1 doesn't look right. but if you had said it was a discrete math class, then it would have made sense.

Not if "+" doesn't mean what you're accustomed to it meaning. God forbid you learn something new and expand the way you think a bit. To be fair, though, I've never been a big fan of using "+" for OR.

They're not. '+' is no longer an addition operator. In your OP, '1+1=1' is saying '1 or 1 is 1' which is 'true or true is true' which is a true statement.

1+1 = 2 is saying '1 added to 1 sums to 2.' This is also a true statement. All they did was switch the meaning of the operator. It's really very simple. Changing the operator doesn't mean anything at all, 'sum' and 'or' still retain their respective meanings.
