What's the string under your tongue called? The one that fastens it to the bottom of your mouth?

    Simple question.

My next question is what are the advantages/disadvantages of having it clipped, my orthodontist wants to clip it.

I can think of some pretty obvious advantages :)D), but are there any more important reasons for doing? Problems?

Im not sure what its called, but that is scar tissue from when your head was formed in the womb.
Its the same stuff that makes up that piece in your nose, and the piece connecting your upper lip to your gums.

i always called it the tongue web, can't remember the actual name though. as far as i can remember, cutting it will simply enable you to stick your tongue out farther, and possibly improve your speech if you have a very restrictive one.

edit: just checked the BME glossary, it's called a tongue frenulum.

    Who's your orthodontist? Gene Simmons?

Seriously, why does he want to clip it? Never heard of anyone having to have that done before.

It sounds painful to me too, but the advantages that I can think of might make it worthwhile.

    Viper,

In your case, it's called the sphincter.

rofl, trust me, you can do plenty with it still attached! No need for surgery, unless you have a legitimate health reason. THat's as bad as getting a 'pump'.

No, that's your uvula. I'm talking about the connection under your tongue.

that may be a slight possibility if the whole thing is cut, but from what i've read, it's an old wive's tale. i wouldn't worry about it, as i doubt your orthodontist would suggest a dangerous procedure. he still wants his money, and you're no good to him dead ;)

If you want something that will give you an advantage in oral sex.
    Get your tongue forked.

Besides the obvious clitoral advantage, what are the reasons for getting it cut?

Could you imagine if you slept with your mouth open and your tongue just flopped out because of it being gone? And can you imagine how much it would hurt if all the sudden your teeth just clenched down because you were having a bad dream involving midgets and naked women?

Reminds me of the time when my dog was sleeping with his tongue hanging out and he jumped because of a bad dream or noise and nipped his tongue with his teeth.

wow, I feel honored-i get to be the first to post with relevant info...

assuming I understand you correctly, the operation is called a "fernectamie" (spelling?). I had it done when I was young. The logic is that, if you have the extra skin there, you might wind up stuttering or living with restricted tongue movements.

I was about 8 when I did this. I dont have any bad memories of horrible, horrible pain-in fact, I recall coming home and playing nintendo the rest of the day.

The "muscle" which holds the tongue to the base of the mouth is called the frenulum

I think it's not necessary to clip it after you know how to talk. Some infants have theirs clipped because it might cause problems when the kid learns to speak.

A friend of mine had his cut because of a speach problem... you can get it cut... hurts like hell I'm told, but its just two quick slices with a scapel and you are done (usually its done when you get your wisdom teeth out cause you are doped up to begin with)...
