Windows wont have a problem with a different hard drive. As far as they are concerned it will look and feel exactly the same. Might be a tad faster if you get a better hard drive though.

I mean, some things will work at a lower performance level if they are made to work with older hardware, right? They can only do their thing with hardware that supports their full capabilities.

But this sounds like it simply would not work in my board, plugged into the controllers I have.

SATA did not exist during the timeframe your board was manufactured. Or if they did, they are not implemented on your board. Which I verified, by looking at the manual for your board at the Abit site.

I see no problem with looking to the future and getting SATA drives, if you desire. But you will need an additional card to make them work. Also, many SATA drives come with only a proprietary power connector. You will need jumpers to convert your existing connectors to SATA connectors.

Nothing I hate worse than my new stuff arriving only to find out that I need still more stuff to make it work.

Power Adapter.

They also make SATA to IDE Adapters but, for the price, a card is the better way to go.

Edit: I'm having trouble finding PCI cards with TWO internal ports. Only cards with ONE port.
