Whats the solution to blowing your budget surplus?

Mr. Ehrlich, a Republican, left office with $1.8 billion in the state savings account. Mr. O'Malley drew $1.2 billion from the state's coffers this year to cover a $1 billion shortfall in his first budget Since taking office, Mr. O'Malley has cut $85 million from the state's $15 billion general fund, which is expected to come up $1.5 billion short next year. The shortfall is the result of state spending growing faster than tax receipts.

Neither seems to understand the idea. If your not taking in enough money then your spending too much. Instead they just take in more money and don't fix any of the bad spending.

Worse, when reading the article it comes to light that these politicians are HIDING the numbers and not letting anyone in on it except a few elites. In other words, they are playing games with taxpayer money and not disclosing what they do. Then to top it off they want to jack taxes. Ramrod it through their legislature and just go on their merry way.

One side cranks taxes and the other just runs up deficits. Both are wrong but both persist by deflecting anger to the other side. 100:1 most of the idiots there will vote for a D or R and never consider a L or I

Haven't you learned yet that nobody officially in government wants a surplus? (seriously). Maybe at the local level where they can't borrow their way out but at the federal level, nobody wants (and many advocate 100% against it as bad fiscal policy) a surplus.

Yeah, it's happened here in Iowa too. Well, not quite exactly like that but not far off. This Governor - just like the last one we had is raiding the coffers of unrelated monies to make the numbers work out.

Pretty damn disgusting IMO.

Most individuals cannot balance their budget properly, so why would they expect their government to? It's pitiful, of course, especially since in the case of government they attempt to balance by stealing more tax money, but the people keep voting them in.

In Alaska they put surplus into a giant fund and they use that fund to send everyone in the state an Interest/dividend check every year.

It looks like the federal congress has come up with a novel approach: just don't pass a budget. You'll still have a surplus or deficit, but people can't blame you for the deficit since you didn't tell them how much they were allowed to spend.
