whats the smallest size fan thats out there?

my pwmic, whatever the heck that is is over 50 degrees C. sometimes it reaches 60.
and my ITE smartguardian is showing it as a red number which cant be good.

so i read on some forum to attach a little fan to the heatsink.

but whats the smallest fan out there to attach. ?

There are as small as one inch (25mm) like are used in notebook PCs and other compact equipment. Then there are 40 to 90/92 mm in 10mm steps. Of course there are odd sizes that can be found but the above are the standards. Those 1" ones often run at 5V and don't push much air. The smallest I'd recommend for some real cooling is 60mm (a bit over 2").

I wouldn't really worry about it at those temps, but if you want to cool them for peace of mind you can try rigging up an 80mm fan somewhere in the area to blow air across them. I've seen people usually use one blowing down from where the memory slots are, but across the mobo would also work depending on your airflow configuration.

Folks over at DFI-Street have said they're rated to over 100C. I've had them up to about 75C while dual priming on a hot afternoon and I've never encountered any stability issues.

Your pwmic is probably Pulse Width Modulation IC Chip. It is most likely used for controlling fan speeds. They are known to get hot. Heat will move through the copper board traces and effect other board componets. Like the capacitors will run hotter. The PWMIC will probably be safe running hotter than 70C. MOSFETs can operate at over 100C.

Rather than putting a fan directed at it, sink it. Small copper RAM sinks work very well for this use.

Might want to check out http://www.dfi-street.com/

Yeah, the PWMIC is good to ~100c easily but if you want to cool it you're going in the wrong direction size-wise.

Go large, like 80mm at least and blow it over the area of the mobo between the cpu and the atx power connectors. Zalman for one makes a bracket you could use to mount on pretty easily.

Using those small fans will be less effective and much more loud.

Need more info to be really helpful here:

What are all your major components?(vid card, processor, any overclocking/overvolting, ram ammount and voltage all of it)
What case is the setup in?
What HSF is on the CPU?

Yep, what HSF on CPU?

The sensor is to the left of the top of those silver heat sinks. The PWMIC area is spread across three parts, the actual PWMIC chip is the rectangular chip up by the ATX connectors.

DFI-street has pictures showing where the sensor is exactly, and what the parts are. There are also thermal shots of a DFI Ultra-D running, to give you the best idea as to what to sink.

If you have a HSF whereby the fan is perpendicular to the motherboard, you could try sawing out the bottom section of the fan. I've done that on my scythe ninja, and it helped PWMIC temperatures about 5degrees worth(as the sensor is just below the now open fan side.)

Use those VGA RAMsinks for the hot areas shown in the thermal pic linked to on dfi-street, and mount an 80mm near the PWMIC sensor to really drop temperatures. You don't NEED to do this, but if it'll give you piece of mind, then that's a plus :)

Linkerage for PWMIC temp info location etc

1) put a fan in the front, a good fan.
2) replace the fan that comes with the case in the rear with a higher flowing fan.
3) let us know how much that affects temps, should be significant.

The rear fan is what is going to make a lot of difference. mine was going 42-46 and I upped the speed on my rear fan a little and the front fan a little(10% each maybe) and it now runs 38-41.

EDIT: oh, ram voltage? this makes a huge difference on the pwm temps.
