What's the smallest piece of check-in lugguage you are allowed on a flight?

i once (soon after 9/11) went through security and they found a wrench in my bag, now this wrench was about, max 4 inches long, but more like 2 inches long.

they said i couldnt take it on the plane and they would have to keep it or they could check it in for me.

i told them just to keep it, but i wish now that i had said that i wanted them to check it, imagine waiting at the luggage claim for a 2 inch wrench

i guess they thought i was gonna take the plane apart bolt by bolt

But that defeats the purpose. I want to check in a manila envelope and have them move it from plane to plane across the northern hemisphere...so that I have nail clippers next week.

I could eat my fingernails if I really didn't have nail clippers but I want to see their reaction.
