single lens reflex... image goes through lens and to a "shutter"--mirror aligned 45*... a parallel mirror on top of that (kinda like opposing sides of a rhombus) is placed so that it catches the image from that bottom mirror...

so, when you look through the viewfinder, you essentially are looking through the lens of the camera..

whereas on a normal point & shoot.. the viewfinder runs straight through the body of the camera and emulates what the lens "sees".

when you take a photo on the SLR... the bottom lens flips... allowing the image to go through the lens and directly to the back of the camera... where the medium captures the image (film or cmos sensor)...

its hard to visualize but easy with a picture

yeah, generally they have more features and controls... and ofcourse the WYSIWYG factor
