Whats the size, type and length of the generic case screw?

I heard the diameter for the generic phillips case fastener is 6/32 with a 1/4 length is this true? I would like to know because I am replacing the phillips fasteners with Torx for various reasons and I would also like to know the comperable size of Torx that would fit PC cases. I believe it is T-10 but I would like a 2nd opinion. Thanks.

take the case screw to a hardware store and also, you are only allowed a bump every 4 hours.....suprised that blain hasnt called you on it yet....

I dont have a case screw to take to a store.... arent they all the same anyway? Also I wouldnt bump so much except that withing 5 minutes its off the top page and i know 90% of people just casually browsing a forum dont look beyond the first page of threads...

The screws used on PC cases are either metric or American - the coarse ones are American, and I know that they're not 6/32. I'm a connoisseur of 6/32 machine screws; I find them to be quite useful for just about anything - and a 6/32 screw is much thicker than computer screws.

Are there any computer-ish stores near you? Go there and get some screws, of each thread type. Best way to size it at the hardware store - try the nuts they've got until you find one that fits perfectly. Then get screws of that size.

Just re-reading your original post here....you're trying to replace Torx screws? Where are these located? Are they used to hold the various panels, like the top panel, in place? Because if that's what it's for, there is no standard screw for that - a lot of cases I've seen use rivets. To get rid of those, I've drilled them out, and then used a 6/32 machine screw with a nut on the other side. I bought a full box of 100 1" long 6/32 screws - if I want any shorter, the Dremel is able to oblige.

Things like PC case screws are governed by various standards created by the SFF (small form-factor) group, as was the original ATAPI standard. I suppose you could look them up that way.

Hi, Case cover screws are for sure 6/32 X 1/4" for most cases. Same screws in various lengths are also used thoughout the case. Cover screw length is usually not critical. Look at clearance if there is any problem getting 1/4". Jim

I got the bit set jhhnn, and yes thats what I was going to get was the Torx tamper resistant didnt you see my tufnut link? anywho thanks for the measurements all.

Most case screws these days are SAE 6/32x.25". Some older cases used #8 screws and some cases like Lian Li use metric case screws (I think they are M-3 or something like that). T10 is a drive size - the thread sizes should be the same as any other screws. The drive size is usually chosen to be proportional to the thread size. McMaster-Carr.com says their pan head, 6-32x.25" is T15. You can probably find some at the bigger Lowes or HomeDepot locations.
