How is it that an engineer got to be helmsman or planesman? ;)

Actually, I may have just showed my ignorance there.
When I failed out of Nuke school I went to deck.
Ticonderoga Cruisers cost a billion dollars.
I was just wondering what sub you were on that cost a mere billion.

i was looking it up, i think trident subs cost $1.7 billion initially, not sure though, still searching

i drove the propeller as throttleman as my normal duty station. to qualify on submarines and earn your dolphins, you have to stand watch as both helmsman and planesman once. and technically, nukes could qualify almost any forward watchstation if they felt like it/were bored.

In the vet clinic I was in charge of some show dog worth around 60 or 70 Grand. The Dr. was out of town that week and I had to vaccinate it, and keep it over night for boarding. It was some kind of Schnauzer, and completely freaking annoying, it would yelp at lest 30 times a minute.

the throttleman controls the main engines, the propeller, thus the speed of the ship

the officer of the deck is in the control room with the helmsman and planesman and chief of the watch and diving officer. the diving officer sits between the helmsman and planesman and supervises them to ensure they maintain depth and course as ordered by the OOD. the chief of the watch moves water between ballast tanks to maintain trim of the boat

the OOD gives engine orders to the helmsman for speed. the engine order is telegraphed (engine order telegraph is a electro-mechanical device) to the manuevering room where the throttleman answer the engine orders and then adjusts the main propulsion turbine throttles to control shaft speed and hence ship speed.

i don't know how surface ships do it. subs are pretty old school on all manually controlled hydraulic controls

A MLVW Medium Truck...towing a C3 Howitzer...and in the truck is 30 rounds of High-Explosive 105MM ammo, and a gun-crew of 7 people.

Other than that, probably a Command Post...complete with antennas, SatCom gear, field radios and ranging computers. About 2 mil each.
