What's the second best cooler out there?

I am in need of a socket 775 non liquid type cooler for an E8400 I plan to overclock on a GA-EP45-UD3P mobo. I was wondering what is the second best cooler out there? The reason I want the second best is because it is typically the best price versus performance choice most of the time.....

I have seen X type under board brackets available to stiffen the board where the cooler is mounted. Are these worth the money?

Xigmatek S1283, Sunbeam CCF, OCZ Vend2, all cheap heatsinks <$40, <$30 if you wait for a sale or rebate(they come often, almost always one of the three is under $30) with cooling capacities just a couple degrees behind the best money can buy (on air of course)

Throw in a screw mounting kit for $5 and GTG

OCZ Vendetta 2 owner here. I love this cooler. Great value and great performance. Idle temps are mid 20's and full rarely ever goes above 50.

You'll wanna get a bolt thru kit too. The push pins suck.

I'm a fan of the AC Freezer 7 Pro. You can often find them for around $15-20 after rebates and they do quite well for the price.

Do any coolers come with the back plate?

I think its sad they have to rip you off another $10 for a back plate which should be included to begin with. For instance you can get the Xigmatech s1283 for $26.99 delivered after rebate from Newegg...then you spend another $10 on the backplate plus shipping. Ok I will stop whining now.....:)

That's what I have and it works well. I don't have an extreme overclock but with my mild overclock, it keeps the temps fairly low.

I've got a curiosity question for you all. Are there any decent 775 coolers out there that do a better job than the stock Intel cooler where the push pin mounting would be adequate? I can certainly see why one would want the backplate kit the monsters that people bolt to their MBs, but I humbly admit that I'm a bit lazzy and would really prefer to not go through the hastle of taking out my mb to attach a new cooler.

The push pin mounting only sucks because of the amount of force needed to secure all 4 pins. They require quite a substantial amount of pressure, and can really bow the motherboard when you're trying to get them in. When I was using the push pins on my Vendetta 2, I could never get all 4 pins in place. There was always at least 1 that i could never get all the way in. I felt like I could have easily snapped my motherboard if I applied much more pressure. I could get it almost the whole way in and it would stay, but every so often it would work its way out, and then I would notice my temps rising very high. I'd have to take the side of my case off and push the pin back in.

Others may have better luck though.

+1 for the Xigmatek S1283 cooler + backing plate

worked great for my previous socket 775 setup and now it's working great on my 1366 rig as well.

Another vote for the Arctic Cooling Freezer coolers. I don't know if they rank second best but for the price it's very hard to beat the performance, especially when you find one on sale.

Mine was $17 on sale and it kept my Q6600@3.4Ghz in check.

I installed my new Xig S1283 with the push pins. At 600gram weight it was lighter than other large heatsinks. I think it will be ok, but what do I know. I will take out the MB for back plate installation when I get some more thermal paste. I did have a bad push pin that did not hold. Had to replace it with one from my old heatsink. Now, I won't be bouncing the case around, that might jar the pins loose.

+1 for xigma 1283 as well. i have the similar vendetta 2, it's quite efficient although similar to the tuniq i replaced. but much smaller, making installation easier.
