i'm not familiar with networking, and my questions is whether it matters what type of wireless adapter you, i'm on a 802.11, can i use any type of 802.11 network adapter? i believe there's different modes of 802.11, so would that restrict the type of 802.11 adapter as well?

There are two main types of 802.11, a and b/g. 802.11g (54 mbps) is backwards compatible with 802.11b (11 mbps) so assuming all of the equipment is set up properly you can use a b client on a g network and vice versa, although if you mix b/g it the speeds will be b speeds. 802.11a is a different standard entirely and is not compatible with b/g. It is mostly used for commercial applications.

i believe i have 802.11g right now then, as it is a 54Mbps network i'm on. and i guess the network i was on before was the 802.11b, since it was an 11mbps before. and the reason why i'm considering to change my network adapter back to the 802.11b is because my current 802.11g network card is too damn flaky! i checked up some stuff on the card, smc2802W, and it has received nothing but bad reviews, so i will then give it a try with my previous network card and see if that'll help

but anyways, thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

do i have to set up the new wireless adapter with the router or something? or can it be detected automatically?

i tried using my old adapter earlier but it said my wireless connection was disconnected.
