I'm new to this and will be putting my computer together tonight using and EPOX8KHA+ and AthlonXp1700. What is the reason to set IRQ's. Do I need to do this? Thanks.

No you dont need to set them , they will automatically set them selves. Why I set my own and others... is so that you limit the chances of IRQ conficts.

IE. 2 devices somtimes try to you the same IRQ's.

Every motherboard is a little different. You only have so many IRQ's on a motherboard. When IRQ's conflict this can cause windows operating system to lock up. If you were going to use multiple Devices that need an IRQ like a Modem ,video editing card, etc, you can give certain devices their own IRQ and turn other IRQ's off.

For example, USB Requires IRQ's, Video Cards Require IRQ's Hard Drive Controller requires an IRQ. Sometimes you can disable IRQ's for one device and use it for a preferred device. Sometimes Windows vive 5 different things the same IRQ. This may slow things down a bit.
