What's the purpose of the ferrite donut?

I think so. An audiophile friend of mine sent me a few ferrite cores to use on the power supply of my headphone amp. Needless to say, i couldn't discern any differences.

The cores are to reduce EMI.

They are necessary because they connect the inside to the outside of the case, and provide a path for EMI leakage.

If you want to use ferrite cores to improve the performance of an audio system, then they should go on the speaker wires, rather than the power supply - this stops radio interference picked up by the speaker cables, feeding back into the amplifier being amplified.
