hey, i got a question thats been bugging me for awhile

why do car manufactors build vehicles that go faster than most national speed limits

pretty much all cars can do 100mph, so why arent cars restricted. nobody needs a ferrarri or porsche, so why build them...

sure in germany you can drive fast, but where else..

but if that was the true reason... wouldn't shirt manufacturers stop making shirts, as well?

People want faster than the posted speed limit cars and are willing to buy them.

I bought a car that takes 7 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph because the acceleration helps me to easily merge on to highway and get away from idiots*.

*Tailgaters, road ragers, the doing 60 mph in the left lane is the right thing to do guys, etc.

The national legal "limit" is not the actual limit accepted by society. In every state I've driven in, you don't stand to get pulled over on the highway for doing anywhere from 1-10 miles over the limit. Police pull people over when they are driving recklessly, or alternately as an extra sort of tax to meet their quotas.

faster cars usually means faster acceleration, which is perfectly practical even when adhering to speed limits

a faster/better performing car means the window of time you have to react to avoid danger can be smaller

oh and saying we don't need something is a horrible argument - we don't NEED cars at all, heck we don't NEED the internet, LETS GET RID OF THESE UNNECESSARY THINGS, RIGHT?

For the same reason you're using a computer that's much more powerful than what you actually need.

i draw the line at toilet paper

In a perfect world, fast acceleration should still remain but a speed limiter should be put in place much lower than they already are in consumer vehicles... say... 85mph.

This is my line of thinking. Though I think all vehicles should be governed to 70-75mph.

I love acceleration, but don't care about speed. Never went more than 75 with my STi.

I'd say we govern sports cars to 140mph. All other cars should be governed to 100mph.

There is no need to go any faster than that on public roads...nor should you.

Isn't it sad that one's status in society is governed by the shit that they buy and not by their contribution to society, e.g., Paris Hilton?
