What's the 'proper' way to break up with someone?

Just broke it off with a girl I was in a long-distance relationship with.

The particulars I won't go into (it would be long and drawn out), but to say I'm COMPLETELY INEPT in the skill of breaking-up would be an understatement.

So I'd like to hear from the side of someone who's been 'dumped'. What was the easiest let-down you've had and how did he/she go about it so that it made the break-up easier for you?

I'd say, the older you are, the more mature you need to be about it. If you're a 16 year old, or something like that, it's really not gonna matter... is it?

Be honest. When my girlfriend broke up with me it hurt a lot but it hurt just as bad or worse when I learned months later that she had lied to me during and after the break up. So I went through great pain twice, when once could have done it.

Be straight and don't beat around the bush. Keep it calm and don't offend her by saying something negative about her. Make everything seem positive.

The Nice Approach: I think you're too good for me...
The Honest Approach: I don't want to be with you anymore.
The Victim Approach: This relationship has been too much for me.
The "Let's Be Friends" Approach: I really like you as a friend...
The f*** you Approach: F*** you, you stupid [female dog], leave me the [heck] alone, [gosh darnit]!

Pick your choice. :)

Make it seem like it was her idea. One good way is to act like a jerk, forcing her to break up with you. I did that once. Worked like a charm. Of course, you won't be able to go out with any of her friends if you choose that option.

depends on your age. i had some pretty messed up breakups when i was younger and well, time changes people and at least my old gf's and i can talk now.

now, i just bluntly tell the girl how i feel (i'm 23 btw). it's just easier that way and i tell her i hope she can do the same with me. i don't want to think about if she's lying or what not, just give it to me. heh.

Girls can get nasty and vindictive! Do a nice job breaking up or she'll be talking about your manhood, according to Maxim. ;)

There is no proper way to break up with someone. But if you feel there is no other recourse, then simple and honest is usually the best way.

It's really hard, feeling victimized in a breakup.:( -kd5-

First, make sure you have someone else waiting in the wings. Just kidding. If it is evident that the two of you are no longer compatible then being honest is the best way to go about it. You might end up being very good friends afterwards.

Flat out tell her:

"Look, this isn't working out. Nothing against you, or me, but I don't think we should continue this."

Plain & simple, & honest.

Just "Stop Calling Her/Answering Her Calls". That always worked for me. ;) Nah, but seriously, just be straight out with her. If she doesn't like it, tough. At least you'll feel better telling her straight up. Then you can still go out with one of her friends afterwards! (j/k) :Q
