What's the proper response to "Hi, how are you doing?"

I used to just say, "Hi" but one time the lady cashier said, "I said how are you doing?".

After that experience, I now say, "Pretty good, how are you?"

But sometimes I get the feeling they aren't expecting that and would prefer if I just say "Pretty good" as a response.

Anyways, I hate this greeting because, let's face it, no one really cares how a stranger is doing. I wish people would just say, "Hi" and none of this, "how are you doing?" crap.

I would go back to "Hi". It might be a long time before another cashier tries to flirt with you. 😉

yea i agree its like:
you: hi
stranger: Hi!, how are you doing?
you: good, you?
stranger: good
you: thats good

Were you, by any chance, wearing a bag over your head when this happened?😛 Maybe she thought you were a special kid from the Short Bus.

i have never said 'bad' or 'not too good' before, even when i felt terrible. you just don't want to get into it at that point.

I emjoy the greeting, especially in stores. Usually if someone asks me how I'm doing and I reply "Good, and you?" my experience is far better than the person who just shruggs it off.

I see it as a "human test". If the person is nice enough to respond, then they are worth your time...

So would I get special service from a hooker if I replied back with a "good and you?"😕

ehh, just trump it.

cashier: "hi how are you?"

you: "how's it going-"

hahahaha. that's the ny thing actually. no one even bothers describing how they're doing. it's just a greeting anyway.

Reminds me of the Budweiser comercial whre the cowboys comes to New York and answers that greeting in an honest way.
Pretty funny.

You get off easy. People at work are always saying "hi, what's new and exciting?" or something like that. I either have to be lazy and say "Not much" or go into a 5 minute dissertation about all the network problems I've had to deal with the past couple of weeks.

I just remembered how an former co-worker used to reply to the how are you question.

"I'm able to sit up and take nourishment".

I just say "Pretty good" or "Good, thank you". Something along those lines work. It's just a friendly greeting, not an actual inquiry into your well-being, from what I can tell.

Yeah, that's my auto-response as well and then a few moments after I say it I realize that's not really an answer but everything goes on anyway.

Oh oh oh, I get to say it:

Sup bitch, date?

🙂

How about:

About as good as can be expected when you're not expecting much...
