What's the problem people have with showing their ID with a Credit Card?

My wife works retail and their new policy (due to chargebacks from people claiming they weren't the persons signing for the card purchase) is to check ID for every check and credit card purchase.

I have witnesses this other places to, the customer goes crazy when their ID is asked for...stating things like 'why would I try to steal this junk?', 'my CC is my ID', 'Are you calling me a crook, I will have your job!' etc...meanwhile the rest of the line has to wait and wait.

Saturday afternoon, one of their regular customers comes in (it's a club/20's style clothing store) with her mother. They were buying a ton of stuff and the mother was loud about how she was picking up the tab and some other stuff that was getting annoying to everyone (the manager was complained to about this woman)...anyways they get to the register.

My wife gets the sale and it's about $300 in clothing the mother brags again she is picking up the tab and hands over a credit card. My wife asks for her ID and then all hell broke loose (the line was also about 10 deep....the store is the largest and most popular in the mall esp on Saturday when everyone is off).

I have it written down since my wife does have a problem with english a little bit sometimes, she was worried if she said something wrong. (Now this is all from her memory of course right after the situation, the manager told her to take a break after this customer, so she wrote it all down..however somethings may be left out or not exactly right)

The first thing she told my wife (who is Japanese) "Do you speak english? Do you KNOW WHO I AM?" I have no idea what those have to do with anything...

My wife said she replied "Yes I speak english, but I am not sure who you are...this is why I would like your ID."

The lady: "The credit card is my damned ID, is there an american here?"

at this point the girl who is about 18-20 my wife thinks (she lives with roommates my wife knows since they come in the store a lot and talk to the staff) yelled "This is the ABSOLUTE last time we shop together, I have told you before about making SCENES....I told you this was my FAVORITE store"....the girl stormed out saying she was sorry to everyone.

the lady: "Now what you do! Why do you need an ID for these rags? Would I ever steal anything made so cheap? Do you know how much my outfit costs?"

my wife: "I am sorry I did not try to upset your daughter, but I do need the ID to check the card, this is policy, I am just doing my job. I can get the manager, or put back these items if you don't want them now. I am sorry but I cannot sell them on a check or credit card without an ID"

the lady: screaming now for an american manager....however the manager there is Korean American.

lady: "oh my god another one! Are you going to tell this girl (my wife is 42, looks 20 ;) ) to ring up these items and stop telling customers I am a thief? Do you understand english?"

the manager "yes I understand english very well, I have been in america over 20 years...however like Hiroe said, we cannot accept your credit card without an ID"

the lady stormed out....the rest of those in line started clapping, she came back in to the store and said "YOU WILL HEAR FROM IMMIGRATION AND MY LAWYERS"....

my wife was upset, but before she went on the break two other customers told her she did a nice job not getting angry and still smiled....however my wife was pretty upset about it.

When they ask me to show some ID for a debit card that has my picture on it, I draw the line.

I've never seen anyone make any kind of scene at all because someone asked for an ID with a credit card.

That's just sad. Some people just think that there are better than everybody else. I get asked for ID on a $5 cigarette and soft drink purchase on campus, and I don't care. In fact I like the fact that they check, so that if I lost my card for any reason, there is a chance that it won't be abused. Nowadays, it has become standard procedure to check the signatures on cards, and I don't mind it all.

My wallet was once stolen and the dudes used it to buy a ton of stuff at Circuit City.

I am all for them checking IDs on CCs.

The story you told is a bit shocking, though. It's a shame people say things like that. How someone could yell something like that in public is beyond me.

Should've copied down the credit card number and posted it here.... A "Rich" person like her doesn't mind it.

as a customer service manager i know that the vast majority of people are screaming drooling idiots with no rational reason for anything they do. if thier card got stolen and used at that store without ID being check you know that same idiot lady would be pissed as hell that you didn't verify ID.

I cant beleive she said all that crap about real American and stuf. Thats just wrong. Oh no! shes going to call immigration!

This really shouldent bother people, it should take an extra 5 seconds to check it, esp. with women who have it in the little see through thing usually.

I get asked sometimes becasue my cards are not signed.

EDIT: Oh my spelling

Some procedures make no sense. This is not one of them (unless the card has a picture on it already), but some procedures just make no sense.

I'm rich and I never use cash. But its no reason for some one to go off the wall like that.

Mastercard (and I am 99% sure Visa is the same) says: "The merchant cannot require additional identification as a standard business practice when you use MasterCard for payment. There are a few exceptions, such as when additional information is required to complete the transaction. For example, a merchant will need your address if goods are to be delivered to your home."

In fact, they want people to report companies that require ID.

That said, the only reason I don't want to show ID to make a credit card purchase is I don't see any need for my personal information to be displayed to every cashier I meet. Nothing against your wife because she's just following store policy, but the policy is wrong.

Oh so true... sigh... :(

I have no problems providing ID with my CC. In fact, it bothers me sometimes when they don't ask.

The one thing I will not give a retail establishment is my phone number, and I will make a mild scene if they press for one. ID with a CC purchase? No big deal there. Don't like being asked for ID? Don't finance your purchase, pay with cash. The lady in the story was whacked-out stupid racist white trash.

It bothers me when places don't ask for ID.
But the worst is that when I went to get a sandwich as Subway last time, I used a card and they didn't even have me sign it. They said they had a new system and you didn't have to sign anymore.
WTF is up with that?

So now, if someone steals my card, they can just use it without knowing any PIN or having to sign?

that's kinda scary..when you interview for a retail job they always give you scenarios where the customer's being rude/mean and you answer how you'd deal with it.

Never thought that it could really happen in real life tho...to that extent, anyway. :( Some people suck.

My wife is Japanese and very very conservative and polite....we are polar opposites in a way....

The lady was said to be a wannabe zsa zsa actually (she lived here also)....this is a relatively rich neighborhood (POLO and tennis, Prince Charles used to come here to play Polo and we had a few tennis greats here, Tommy Lee Jones just moved into the neighborhood, and the founder of Outback Steakhouse (well one of the three) lives here as well)..

I understand that it is standard operating procedure to ask for verification when using a CC or checks.

In all reality, the signature is a joke anyway. The area on the back is too small for a good signature. As a result, the signature is normally different just to fit it in the area. Besides that most people aren't going to really check to see if they match.

No wonder the credit card companies lose so much money every year.
