EUREKA! I FOUND IT! :) I had to change a windows hardware driver from Uniprocessor PC to ACPI PC - why that fixed it I don't know but it works fine now.

OK I got this game, Klingon Academy. Fly through space in huge starships (Klingon, Federation, anything) and blow each other to bits. Pieces go flying, the graphics are great, BOOM. Great fun. I love watching those flaming bits go floating through space (unless those bits and pieces came from me! ;) )

EXCEPT........!

The game hitches EVERY TIME I shoot, unless the ship I got targeted is out of range. I press the trigger, it hitches, and almost every time it is bad enough to make my shot go way off and miss. The most annoying thing about this tho is it runs on my parents PC perfectly!
Their specs:
cheap SiS chipset of some sort
1.2GHz duron
512MB of PC133
GeForce 3
WinXP pro

My specs:
nForce 2 Ultra400
AthlonXP-M 2400+ @ 2.2GHz
512MB PC3200
Radeon 9800 Pro
WinXP pro

Really annoying! The only thing I can think of is the game has problems with ATI cards. I've tried compatibility mode and that doesn't help any.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Or maybe know of a patch or fix somewhere?

*EDIT* OK, I just found that once the enemy's shield is down, it runs better. I also noticed graphics glitches that don't appear on my parents PC (phaser beams half disappear, nebula polygons flicker, holes in the tractor field). It must be a graphics thing I guess. (Maybe I can hack the game so the enemy ships don't have shields up so it runs better :p)
Sometimes the game crashes too for some reason, usually right as I pull the trigger.

If you are a both running XP Pro then it is definately a hardware/driver issue.

How old is this game and what are the system specs?

All the issues I have had like this before have been sound issues. My sound card was too advanced for the game to use or some dumb crap like that.

yeah, I got the 1.02 patch, didn't fix anything. Drivers are up-to-date too. I even tried pulling my sound card out so I had no sound at all, still hitched.
The game is fairly old (although the graphics are great). It requires minimum a 233MHz, 64MB RAM, 8MB graphics card, Win 95/98/ME. (Frankly it doesn't run well at all at with that hardware. It didn't run all that great on a 450MHz with 96MB RAM and a TNT2 Ultra 32MB graphics card either).

I'm just wondering if it doesn't like ATI cards in winXP for some reason. I know of a few games that needed a patch for the GeForce series in winXP. I'm almost expecting some sort of registry hack to get it working.
