Whats the policy at your college for missing a midterm due to an illness?

I was supposed to take my mid-term on Thursday (3/11) but I got ill and stayed home. I called the department that day and told the secretary that I was ill and that I was going to miss my midterm. She told me that she would put a note in the professor's mailbox explaining my situation. Before I got off the phone with the secretary I told her that I would come in on Monday to make up the mid-term. Well I got extremely sick on the weekend and I was feeling horrible by Monday. I was vomiting, had stomach cramps, etc.. I was very ill. The secretary called my parents on Monday and told them that she was expecting me. I never made it.

Well fast forward to today. I called in the morning and talked with the secretary and explained my situation. She told me that she would leave a message with my professor explaining what had happened and that I wanted to take the mid-term that day. Later on I went up to the college campus I immediately went to the department. At that time my professor didn't return her phone call. The secretary said that she would call me to let me know what is going on. My professor never called back. It looks like I'm going to go to class this Thursday without taking the mid-term and I'm going to have to explain my situation.

We had spring break last week so there were no classes. Also, I have 2 doctors notes. One that states that I could go back to school on 3/15 and one stating that I could go back on 3/22. The reason I have 2 is that I thought I would be in perfect health on 3/15 so the doctor put that date down, but I immediately went to the doctors on Monday when my health started to get worse. I got the 2nd doctors note that covers me from 3/10 to 3/22. I plan to show both notes. His syllabus says nothing about making up tests.

I haven?t talked to my professor in a couple of weeks. He doesn't respond to emails and I can't personally call him. He is an adjunct so he has another job. I guess he doesn't want to be bothered. If he needs to be contacted the departments secretary does the calling.

So can he deny me from taking the mid-term? From what I've been told I actually have one semester to make up any missed test. Is like this in your college? Also does he have to take into consideration that I was ill and that I do have a doctor's note?

thanks.

have to have a doctor's note to make up some tests. other professors replace your test grade with what you make on the final. others make you take a test during the final exam period after you finish your final.

I had a professer that used to joke, if your not in the hospital or dead, you better be there.

You should have called when you couldn't make the rescheduled makeup. Throwing up all weekend is NO excuse for not calling. Calling the department takes 30 seconds, and no matter how sick you are, you are able to do it if you're conscious.

Calling the department about not being able to make the makeup exam on Monday should have been your FIRST priority. I'm frankly surprised that you didn't call, seeing as how you're so concerned about it.

Nausa, vomiting diahrea and cold sweats. I would have threw up in class while taking the mid-term. Actually this is the only test that I have ever missed due to an illness. I'm only one semester from graduating and I have a 3.2 gpa

I work the grave yard shift (40 hours a week) and I'm holding down 13 credits. I don't screw around when it comes to college.

It's good you have the notes but frankly waiting that long to get back to her...? Come on.

Profs have a lot of power. If he's an asshole he'll not let you take the test, if he's nice he'll let you take it. Always go to the prof first when you need something. You should've emailed or called your prof the first and second time you were sick.

Oh your correct. Well I should restate what I said in my first post. I called that Thursday and told the secretary my situation. I told her that I would hopefully come in on Monday to take the exam. I missed Monday because my illness worsened and I called back on Wednesday and told the secertary that I was still ill. I told her that hopefully I was going to drive up to college to drop off a paper and she told me that because of spring break no professors are on campus. So she told me to call back later that week to reschedule my exam.

Anyway, I'm taking my other missed exam tomorrow. My professor told me to come in an hour before class starts and I'll be able to get it done and out of the way. That wasn't a big deal, so hopefully my other professor will have the same attitude. I guess I'll find out on Thursday.

At my university the standard policy is that with a doctor's notice or an immediate family member's death, we can make up a test. Both require proof, and both generally require notice before the test was taken. It really goes to the professor to decide - he/she can allow more exceptions if he/she wishes.

I'm still quite curious as to how you waited so long. Why no call on Monday to the secretary?

As i stated earlier he doesn't respond to emails and that the secretary is the only one that calls him if a problem arises. Also, there is nothing on the syllabus that says anything about making up a missed exam.

On Monday, besides going back to my doctor I slept the full day. I got up to get some fluids but that was about it. Also, I should have told you guys that the secertary called my mom about taking the test but I never got the message. I don't have a home telephone so it can be a pain in the ass.

At my school the policy varies prof to prof and dept to dept but it's generally accepted that anything with an Rx at the top and signed by a Dr. at the bottom will keep you out of trouble. :)
