so, you find a spot that gives you internet access, but you are confined by battery life of the laptop and the physical constraint (since you have to be inside your car right). So why do it?

oh, wardriving = Text

Because it's kool?

It's amazing how many unsecured wireless networks are available. I recently moved from an apartment (which had at least 2 unsecured networks I could hop on) to another subdivision in town. I've only been using wireless for a few weeks now, but was suprised to fine 3 networks I could easily access.

Because you have no other Internet access at the time. Centrino laptops can last over 6 hrs these days, so that's not a problem. And sometimes it's nice just to map what's around, find out what cafe's have APs and such. I've done a limited amount of war driving, it's mostly so you can go "holy sh!t, look at all of these unsecured APs!" but I also needed it a few years ago because my Grandmother had no highspeed Internet access so I drove around until I found someone who did.

You can run your laptop off the batter of your car, so you could do it for a while actually.

once you perfect the method, you basically have unlimited internet access anywhere.

As a realtor I spend quite a bit of time in the car driving around with clients. If I knew that I had a wireless spot within a couple minutes of anywhere I was in town, that would quite useful. Being able to look up the tax info or other details on any property as I drive around would save me so much hassle.

v. The benign act of locating and logging wireless access points while in motion
wardriving is not a crime.

That is the true definition. A true wardriver does not actually connect to any of the wireless network, a true wardriver logs all the wireless networks and if possible maps them out with GPS. I do it for fun sometimes...really. It's interesting to see teh growth of wireless networks. For example, I took two drives separated by a period of 3 months, in the 3 months, the same drive that produced 24 wireless networks, now has over 70! I just find it to be a fun and educational hobby.

By connecting to the wireless network you are basically separating yourself from a true ethical wardriver, you are then considered a criminal (unless the network is truly a public network). This is not the goal of wardriving. It's just like how now the word "hacker" is now used to describe an evil person who breaks into computers and steals your data then sets you computer on fire...when really the word hacker originated way back in the 70's meaning basically just someone who enjoys doing anything on a computer...a computer hobbyist, much like most of the people on this board

You are all Hackers! :)

Are you sure its illegal to connect to an insecure wireless connection? I mean if they are stupid enough to leave their network open then its their fault that others are using their internet access.

Hey, you left your car running and unlocked. I don't care that you just jumped out to drop off an envelope, it's your fault for being so stupid.

So you don't consider it trespassing if someone walks across your yard if you don't have a fence or coming into your house if you leave the door open?

Wireless signals are not like physical property.
Is it illegal to have a radio pick up the frequency of your neighbours radio broadcasts?

At the most basic level, no, but you intercepting a broadcast is different from your paticipating in the broadcast by joining their network and using other resources.
