What's the point of upgrading to the latest and greatest anymore????

With the new Nvidias coming out at well over $500 retail what is the point of upgrading anymore?? I mean all the decent cards out now can do framerates beyond what I can actually see. There's not any games that can bring my ATI 64 down (in 32 bit of course). I am just getting a feeling that video hardware is getting to far ahead of software demands. I know VCs need to stay at least a year ahead, but I think I will be able to sit on this ATi ($165 BTW) for at least a couple. So is there really any reason to get an NV20 card anyway?

(I am building another box soon)

what is the deal with "All your base are belong to us." I saw that web site yesterday, pretty cool, but why???

Most of the people are addicted to upgrading their system. Once they see how fast they can run quake 3 and how pretty it becomes, people start to benchmark their system. Then they get addicted to more performance.

It's an endless cycle of upgrading video cards and cpu. I bet most of the people here don't even play that many games but are infactuated by technology. I know because I was addicted myself. I was loosing all of my free time and my sleeping time. At the end, I quit gaming and got rid of my duron @ 1000mhz 5 months ago.

To answer your question. You only need a voodoo 3 @ most to play today's games! You don't need a radeon, geforce, nv20. You would like to have radeon, geforce, nv20 but I still kicked your booty with a voodoo 3!

Eman, i'll have to totally disagree with your assertion about only needing a Voodoo3.

After my fans died on the 5500, a buddy of mine let me have his 3500

EGADS!!!!!

what a MASSIVE drop in EVERYTHING!!!!

I realized what a spoiled bitch I am. The 3500 looked like utter $hit compared to the 5500. I couldn't even play NFS-porsche. Too painful without FSAA, and the 3500 couldn't handle high resolutions.

Nope...sorry, gotta disagree. V3 is a great bargain card, but that really is low-end.

Played Giants yet?

I'll wager that unless you are blind, your system can't push more FPS then you can see in that one😉

Beyond that, ask again in a week as to why upgrade🙂

Imagine Warcraft III, 3D and able to scroll around. In no time we'll be swimming in our games.

Putting on my diving gear.

The questions are:
1. What can you afford?
2. What do you want in terms of performance?

These are similar question as when and what car to buy?
1. Why not buy a sub $10,000 car (it will get you from point A to point B)?
2. What do you want in terms of performance?

My brother is trading in his 2001 Dodge Intrepid for the 2002 model. Is that really necessary? If he wants to do it and can afford, then who cares?

As for computers, the faster the better for me. As for cars, I like them to be reliable and I can't afford $25,000+ vehicle.

"1. Why not buy a sub $10,000 car (it will get you from point A to point B)?"

Cause I feel the odd need to slam on the gas pedal every time the red light turns to green.. 😉 😉 😉

I really should stop though, its costing me a ton of money in gas 🙁

heh, apart from the new funky features cards need far more horsepower to make the same resolutions good in fsaa.
you can play QIII in XGA 4fsaa. that IS spoilt!
3d cards are good for 3d games because people are tempted to buy games that show off their cards and justify their purchases to themselves! I don't think i enjoyed a pc game in 3d as much as Amiga 2d stuff...

Some of us here have 21" monitors and would like to explore higher resolutions. I'd like to play Giants at 1600x1200. Right now I get ~20-30 fps on my GF2 in 16 bit.

<< You would like to have radeon, geforce, nv20 but I still kicked your booty with a voodoo 3 >>

Well, I'll take you on with my old Diamond Monster Voodoo 1 video card (after knocking the dust off of it) in Quake 3 Arena. You may be nothing but a blur to me at 640 x 480, but I'll still kick your a$$! 😛

Bring it on Compellor!

Robo, as much as I like eye candy, I have to disagree with you. Long as you have this magic # of 60fps @ 640x480 any game is playable. Sure it looks like $hit but sometimes that's all I need to kick your a$$.

You know well that a voodoo 3 will run higher than 640x480. Most of the time it'll run games @ 1024x768 or 800x600 with the 22bit post filter. That's plenty for average gamer. If you don't think so, than try playing consoles.

I'm not saying I'll buy a voodoo 3 now but I'm saying that's all you need to start gaming.

I'm gonna get a radeon as soon as my free computer gets here. HEHEHE

I think it depends on the type of games you play ,some type of games are more demanding also the resolution you play at will determine how long before you need a faster card,if you play at 640x480 16bit well your card will have a longer playability life,if on the other hand you play at 1024x768 32bit colour or above then shorter playability life, the trick is knowing when you need to upgrade your video card rather then for just the sake of it,some of us know when while others just do it to have the latest or fastest card or have lots of money to spend, eitherway it`s down to you.

🙂

You could play Q3 with a Voodoo 1!!! My friend spends his cash on drinks and strippers and is still playing Q2 on a P200 w/V1!:Q Loser.

EMAN,

If you are so good a gaming, then WHY in your sig does it say that you "quit gaming"? Seems strange to me....:Q

i upgrade most of my stuff like twice a year. Its for the hobby i guess. I dont know, you'll never see me spend more than $200 on anything though (except a monitor). Its really dumb to spend more than $200 on anything, because above that its in the extreme luxury realm. i mean i hav ea 1ghz tbird and that is VERY fast and it was still under $200. i've got a radeon LE. they are like $90 now, and well i'm sure they are at least half as fast as a geforce ultra for 1/4 the price. I mean there is a difference between sensible upgrading, and flat out money burning.

"Long as you have this magic # of 60fps @ 640x480 any game is playable. "

I hear what you're saying, but on T4, my 3500 was dropping below 60 fps in some parts, and I don't care what ANYONE says, railing @ 1280x1024 is FAR FAR easier than railing @ 640, especially at a distance.

"I'm gonna get a radeon as soon as my free computer gets here. HEHEHE"

oh, you BITCH!!!!
