What's the point of quoting the previous comment?

So what's the point of quoting the comment that is at the bottom of the thread? When scanning through topics, I notice that people do this all the time. I just read what person A, had to say. Do I really need to be reminded what he said? I can understand if you're replying to a person several comments up, or on a previous page. But, does the page have to be filled up with layer upon layer of quotes?

Because, sometimes, by the time you type out your response and reply, there may be a couple other replies and then it looks like you are responding to the guy above you and it can lead to confusion.

I clean up the nested quotes though after a certain amount.

Just so you are 100% positive as to who a person is responding to.

Quoting the person you are replying to is good so everyone knows who you are replying to. Cleaning up nested quotes is a good idea (more than 2 or 3 quotes) and helps keep thread clutter down.

To tell the poster and readers that you are responding directly to the post.

Are you new at this intarweb/BBS thing?

Yes, cleaning up nested quotes should be enforced. Quoting like 8 deep just destroys a thread, and it doesn't take to much effort to clean up some tags.

Yes, but sometimes someone posts while you are typing your message which can cause confusion.

Now, you don't know that it will even happen, or cause confusion, but it's just smart posting.

But if you're typing out a long response, what if thirty other people make posts between the time you start typing your response, and the time you post your response? Then there's no way to know which post you're responding to.

Case in point: this post. I was responding to Nacelle, not TallBill.

Sort of, but you really aren't pulling your weight. I suspect you're a bit sympathizer.

youre on dial-up, or your response is too long because:

a: youre being sensible and explaining yourself
b: youre an imbecile who doesnt know when to shut up
c: youre old and slow

Easier to have a discussion about a certain point if it's been quoted and then can appear in further quoted posts which aren't right next to the original comment(s).
