What's the point of quoting someone when you're the first one to reply?

I've seen it a lot and it's pretty pointless...unless you think the original poster is going to erase/change what is in his original post.

BTW, if the first person who replies to this thread quotes me I'm going to beat them with the trout

*shines his trout*

It's always nice to show your references when speaking I say.

but when you're the FIRST PERSON to reply?

I mean, even if you're the second or third person, I think we can figure out that you're speaking to the thread poster.

Because you don't know if you're going to be the first to reply. With the speed of Anandtech, you could view and empty thread, type up a response, and suddenly your response is twisted by a post that landed between you and the original. So you quote to keep your reply in context.

so you're second or third, I think people here can figure out who you're talking to.

The person who started the thread gave it a topic. Anyone who replies to that thread is talking about the posted topic.

Quoting should only be used if you're talking directly to/about someone in that thread.

Just a thought.

if you are talking about one specific thing they say, it's good to quote someone so you know what you are talking in reference to, rather than someone having to go back and try and find it.

I don't know about codes of conduct for the trout. But I do know if you got a wang you can't use the trout.

I never understood the trout smacking thing, they're too small to cause any damage. You'd want to use a like a swordfish or something.
