What's the point of one-way streets?

I don't get it... mostly in college towns too in MI. All they do is just make people confused (mainly me) and harder to get to destinations. The roads are way wide enough to split them. :-\

1) To increase the traffic a street can handle in one direction.
2) To increade the available parking. (Drivers can park on both sides of street now)
3) To block drivers from taking a shortcut through a neighborhood.
4) To control where cars go.

It's to kill off people who are too stupid to read signs. If someone is too stupid to read a sign, they will most likely go in the wrong direction and cause a giant ass car crash resulting in the elimination of his or her own life and possibly other lives.
