What's the point of having multiple cell phones?

I recently have been using howardsforums.com and it's really cool and helpful. The people over there are nice and all.

But I'm shocked at how many cell phones some of them have. I just yesterday purchased my first "real" cell phone (i.e. one not given to me by my parents as a way to keep in touch). Meanwhile some of the crazies over there have like 8 cell phones.

Can anybody shed light on this?

I don't get it either. I can understand 2 phones, say if your employer gave you one for work and you kept your personal phone, but 8 is just insane!
 
Most phones they have uses a Sim card.

all you would need to do is take the sim card out of one phone to another phone and use it.

It's like having multiple cars or even multiple computers ( in that case you would be the sim card )

Pretty much. They have different phones for different places. If they are browsing the web they take a certain phone, if they are going in middle of no where and know one phone has better RF they use that, if they are going somewhere without pockets they take a tiny phone, etc.

It is like us having a gaming machine, an HTPC machine, workstation, server, etc.

Well we've got 2 at our house... but that's just because I have one and my parents do.. currently my 3360 nokia is in for service cuz the lcd screen started going out... damn thing.
