Whats the point of getting a plasma EDTV?

The only reasonable way to explain EDTV was that it was a stopgap in the event people wouldn't pay the higher prices for HDTVs. Yup, that worked well for all 10 people who own one.

If you only want to watch DVDs and standard cable it saves you $200+ over a 720p at 42".

If you want to hook up an Xbox360, PS3, HD-DVD, or HD cable/sat/OTA then it's a bad idea and not worth the money savings.

Why do you care? It's probably a good middle ground (I assume, as I'm not really well educated on home video/audio) between cheap older tech and really expensive newer tech.

Edit: True there are new gadgets coming out that make use of HD such as the above mentioend consoles and video formats... but DVDs are still the primary distribution means for movies, HDTV channels aren't exactly common in homes and... well only the Xbox360 is out, and I couldn't really care less about playing in 720p. Ya it looks smoother, but I'm less concerned about console graphics than I am about PC graphics... wierd.

After comparing a nice panny 42" EDTV and some other brand 42" HDTV side by side both displaying HDTV and seeing a better picture coming from the Panasonic, I?d say there is more to it than just resolution.

Because if you're sitting far away enough, HDTV and EDTV is pretty much indistinguishable, even with HD sources. And, most people don't care enough about quality to think twice about it.

One of the best reasons for getting an EDTV is because most of the content out there right now already matches that format.

If you watch 99% movies, old sitcoms, Comedy Channel, Food TV, the gardening channels, and Shop-At-Home networks than buying an HDTV just doesn't make sense-- you would be paying more money for lower overall picture quality. HDTVs would have to scale all of that to match their physical resolution.

I've said before that if it wasn't for the NFL being in HD, I wouldn't have purchased an HDTV. For most of the other shows I watch, having them in HD is great but certainly not worth the premium I paid at the time, IMHO.

Agree... I sold Plasmas for a while, and one of the best sellers was an LG PX4 set.(ED) It had a frickin wicked picture for the $.

I think EDTV was a lot more popular over in Europe, I see them as commercial displays a lot... coolness of plasma without the former high price I guess

Which is why you ditch sh!t like plasma and walk right to the DLP aisle 😀

EDTV FTL, HDTV FTW. On my sister's crappy Sony SXGA LCD, I can still tell the difference between a 720p TS file and a DVD of the same film. The HDTV plasma in question would have to suck considerable ass to look worse than an EDTV plasma, provided they were both displaying HD content that hasn't been raped/processed, much like store setups, and both properly calibrated.

EDTV is great if you need a plasma or big TV but don't have the budget nor need for HDTV. People say "yeah, I don't have any HD channels but I DO watch DVD in HDTV!"

and in all honesty, EDTV does look good compared to stardard CRTs.

It's all about tools for the job. There are times and places ED excels, and times that you could do better with an HD set.

Only someone completely ignorant would make a blanket statement about them.

BTW, apples to apples, things like contrast, black levels, and shadow detail make a much bigger image quality impact than resolution when talking about video at typical cinematic viewing distances.
