whats the point of buying a P4 with a BUS speed of: 800 MHz?

not another intel vs. amd flame thread in disguise.

btw, the revision "c" p4's are extremely good overclockers.

its a quad pumped 200fsb thus 4x200 = 800.

pc3200 is what you need for it. and it increases performance quite well.

AMD/DDR is Double pumped, so thats where you get the 400mhz from.

While Intel's Processors are Quad Pumped. Meaning 200mhz (PC3200) memory = 800mhz

Intels processors are much more dependant on memory bandwidth, so thats why they recieve benefits or higher bandwidth, even if its anything other than 1:1.

I think the answer you're looking for is Dual Channel DDR RAM. That way, you can get the speed of 2x PC3200 400mhz sticks, which is 800mhz matching the FSB speed.

i guess i didnt ask the question the right way.
i am going to build a new computer soon and i was thinking that a

CPU BUS:400 paired with DDR 400 ram
would compete with
CPU BUS:800 paired with DDR 400 ram

since the ram is the limiting factor because it can only go at 400, so have a 800 BUS cpu wouldnt really help. but i guess i am wrong :( thanks for flaming me.

had you said that in the beginning ... this thread probably wouldnt have deteriorated. ;)

It wouldn't compete the 400 runs at 100Mhzx4. While the 800 runs at 200Mhz x 4. The 100Mhz difference in bus speed would make a big difference.

Dude, look at the benchmarks. The 800Mhz bus P4's wipe the floor with earlier generations. There are reviews everywhere.

P4 800MHz FSB CPU is paired with TWO 400MHz DDR stick for a total of.....Dual channel 400MHz=800MHz. Easy math class.

are you sure?

i thought 800 was 200mhz quad pumped not 400mhz in dual channel?

and ddr is only 200mhz double pumped to get 400mhz, sid, i think you interpreted what jack said wrong.

the RAM is dual channel

Don't bother trying to explain it. From this thread it's easy to see that he doesn't have a firm grasp on the technologies being discussed.
I hope that he reads some guides before posting again.

If u seriously need to ask that question, then you wouldn't notice the performance difference anyway.

If ur really going to be buying this rig in the near future, then save your money and get a 533FSB version with Granite Bay or something

Yeah, and dual 1.2Ghz Athlons is like running a 2.4Ghz one too, right????

But trolling aside, you're treading on VERY THIN ice when you start making statements like that.

He's not that far off. What he's trying to say is:

The 800MHz FSB offers 6.4GB/s of bandwidth.
Each memory channel at DDR400 offers 3.2GB/s.
When you have a dual channel setup (like i865 or i875) you get twice that -- 6.4GB/s.

So in the end dual channel DDR400 offers the same bandwidth as the 800MHz FSB. Nothing is running out of sync.

Yep 6.4Gb/s from CPU->NB and 6.4Gb/s RAM->NB and the other way around too. Same frequencies too, different bit width i think... still not shure how they pull off that "Quad-Pumped" business.

Hey, Vapor, I learned quite a bit from this thread so don't feel bad. I'm getting ready to upgrade to the 800FSB in a couple of weeks, I'm just waiting on CPU price on the 2.4. Thanks for the discussion, it was all stuff I should know for my upgrade.

It's around $200 for one now. Is the price going down?

You are kidding me right? So how am I treading on "VERY THIN ice" Mr. 116 post member? Please enlighten me with your knowledge.
