It's not exactly a pillow, but just about anything is better than your head hitting the steering wheel.

Thats what seatbelts are for.
a seatbelt keeps you from flying around, and an airbag keeps you from impact with the steering wheel or dashboard.

Don't worry about him... He's a little slow.

I know. I was trying to get the point across, not go into the physics of the chemical reation that inflates the bag. Or the huge forces of it expanding to meet your face, and the differences between slowing your head down from the speed you were going to being at rest over 8" instead of nearly instantly stopping as your head hit hits the steering wheel or the windshield.

The seatbelt will hold your lower torso, not your head.

Side impact airbags are even more useful, as no seatbelt is going to stop your head from slamming into your window in a side impact collision.

Why are people so keen to question safety precautions designed by people who are far more intelligent than they are?

Airbags are used in conjunction with seatbelts to provide the maximum level of safety possible in a consumer vehicle. A seatbelt is essentially there to keep you in position, primarily so that you can remain under control of the vehicle in a minor collision.

An airbag is there to prevent many things - in particular, whiplash. It also provides a cushion between a passenger and the car, which allows the force of the impact to be distributed evenly across your body.

delta p = Fnet *delta t

Its all about the delta t. The air bag allows for a greater delta t, thus allowing for less force on your body

This thread completes the trifecta of car saftey flamebait threads. First the tailgaiting thread, then the seatbelt thread, and now this. Good job.

Last time I checked, when I stopped suddenly, I don't remember my face getting even slightly close to the dash board, what prevented me from this? It's called the seatbelt.

"Stopping suddenly" is not quite the same thing as, say, hitting a brick wall. Your stops may seem "sudden" to you, but they really aren't, and I doubt you've ever stopped so suddenly that the front of the car buckled and pushed the dashboard towards your face.

I'm sure this is all flamebait anyway (or you really are that stupid), but your car comes to a MUCH quicker stop in a head on collision than it does from slamming on your brakes.

If the dashboard comes AT ME, the the car's firewall ISN'T doing it's job...

Now go drive into a brick wall at 50 and report back.

Now go drive into a steel reinforced wall at 80 and report back.
