What's the point of a best man?

I just had a drunken conversation with my mom about my wedding plans. Of course we're on slightly different wavelengths (her being drunk and 60 years old and staunchly Catholic and me being none of those!). But I DO have to haev a BEST MAN.

I always thought your best man was your best friend basically. But she says it's always your closest male family member. Like if you have a brother your brother is AUTOMATICALLY your best man?

My fiancee calls it "someone to stand up for you." I don't quite know what that means...it's not like people are going to be insulting me! My mom calls it a witness.

She had a hard time explaining it to me. I'm a very logical, practical person. I don't want to know about pomp and circumstance. What is the true, bare bones, purpose of having a best man? Once I understand that I can get into the ceremony and stuff.

Please try to explain this the way you would explain how a piece of computer hardware works. I need it.

I am SOOO not about a bachelor party. I've never liked going to strip clubs...it's like being at a barbeque but you can only look at and sniff the food.

A bachelor party would only be worth it if you actually got to fvck an actual hot girl, with permission from the wife. Other than that, not wirth it IMHO.

My best man was my brother.

In Catholic tradition the best man may have several roles. May include bachelor party, organizing transportation, holding the rings the day of the wedding, etc. Those are all just examples, there is no set role. It doesn't have to be a family member IIRC.

I told my best man the same. I do not want to go to a strip club or have strippers at all. I simply want a guys night out involving gambling and free booze.

It's a holdover. A ceremonial relic of a person who once performed the vital function of assisting the groom in carrying off the newly acquired wife.

Well being a finance major I really can't stand for gambling (unless it's between individuals. But at a casino or playing the lottery is a losing game). And I'm not much of a drinker.....maybe I could make an exception for this. But it better not be the night before the wedding!

I have yet to play the lottery or lose at a casino.

Exactly. The best man was a tradition started a long, long time ago to protect the bride from being swiped (shows you how long ago that was 😉) Now their duty has changed throughout the ages and is what meltdown said. That being said, it is up to you to choose your best man but typically it will be your brother if you have one just because you will probably have to spend holidays with them and you don't want any "bad blood". I have 2 brothers and I chose 1 of them which is probably stupid. One of my other brothers got married and he chose both of us as best men. Just pick whomever you feel more comfortable with the above roles, afterall it is YOUR wedding

from what i can tell (brother was married this summer) the best man is the person who you feel knows you best, will stand up for you (as your wife said)
its an honorary thing, aside from being just a witness

it can be anybody you want it to be... the person who you feel most comfortable with or the person who you deem most responsible. The bride will have a maid of honor because, frankly, she needs all the help she can get on the day-of... she can't do all that alone, believe me... and you shall have someone like a best man to partner with the maid of honor throughout the day after the vows... at the reception, pictures, etc. Not everyone else will be looking so uniform.

I'm going to be best man at two weddings next year and in 2006, probably got a third one on the cards for 2005. When another friend gets married, he'd most likely ask me. Which could make four of them, how the fvck I'm supposed to choose a best man for myself I don't know... 😕
