What's the performance difference between P4 2.66 and P4 2.4?

Research

I'm in the process of deciding between the processors:

- P4 2.66 ($241) and
- P4 2.4 ($165)

I would be using the Intel D845PEBT2 motherboard with no overclocking.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD BE THE PERFORMANCE DIFFERENCE BEWEEN THE TO?

(I plan to use my new PC mostly for video editing)

.26 would be my guess

sorry, I just HAD to...

Real world difference, you would be $76 poorer for no measurable performance gain (assuming both chips share same architecture and just have a small difference in mhz)

the 2.4 is almost same as the 2.6 im guessing. If you where to get the 2.4 you could OverclocK it to the 2.6 speeds. depending on your system config already.

OR

HOW ABOUT THE 2.53 FOR $193? IS IT WORTH TO UPGRADE FROM 2.4? (Just 28 bucks more than 2.4, but $48 cheaper than 2.66!)

(All are 533 FSB)

Honestly, you're not going to feel a difference. If it makes you feel better to know you have a slightly faster processor, then go for it.

Just my .02

BUT if you're doing video editing and a process that might take you a whole day to complete. It might pay to get the fastest processer that you can afford. Well depending on how rich you are.

Thanks for your suggestions. So it pretty much seems that spending so much on 2.66 is a waste. However, from the feel good perspective, P4 2.53 seems worth for just 28 bucks more than 2.4. BUT I READ THE FOLLOWING REVIEW ON NEW EGG. IS IT TRUE:

i bought this processor. it's running stock, with DDR memory at 358 MHz, and it's nice and quick. But man this thing runs hot. I replaced the pad with artic silver and it's around 61 C at full load, which is within the operating limits but still. The heatsink they include is big but has like 3 fins. 😉 And like all Intel fans, it's less than silent and barely blows any air for the noise. If I end up overclocking the CPU I think I'll want a better heatsink, if for nothing else than peace of mind. but i just about died when i started some mpeg4 encoding. =)

IS THE COOLING THAT BAD, AND THE FANS SO SCREWED UP!!

If u're going in for video editing (I do a lot myself), go for the most even if u gotta put it on a payment plan + LOTS of RAM.

Vonkhan you changed my mind ... I guess, now I'll get 2.66.

Currently I have bought 512 DDR333 PC2700 memory, but I plan to double it soon!

I would say 2.5 Mhz (bestdeal for money)
and double or triple memory, but if you have the slots for it i would just double now and see how it works out, then add another 512.

Oh, Straightpipe, I'm sorry, I succumbed to Vonkhan's advice and ordered 2.66 for 239.50 form googlegear (shipped)

Well, the motherboard ( Intel D845PEBT2 ) has only two slots. So I guess, I'll have to have the expensive 1gig in the second one!

2.5 MHZ Wow now that's slow. a 8086 ?

check out my system. the 2.53 is GREAT hahah the cpu and mobo are the same as what you are going to get, except I havent updated it with the extra 512 mb ram I just got.

well you can run your motherboard in burn in moade and it will be running at 2.63 if you get the 2.53ghz.

Hi GnomeCop!

I saw your system .. looks great! I'm happy that the thing works nicely. Well, I'd a few questions regarding your mobo:

1. The product specifications state that this model has "Three IEEE 1394a-2000 ports (optional)". In the reviews on newegg, I remember one guy saying that, the motherboard he got does not have the IEEE ports. When he called, he was told that this option is only available in the OEM board. Can you please comment on this? Can I use the optional mobo ports in case they are not pre-wired or something? I really want the board with the IEEE ports on it.

2. Why do you have Sound Blaster Audigy 2 card installed? I heard that the board has amazing sound system.

3. I saw that you are using ATi All-In-Wonder Radeon 9700 Pro video card. Actually I already have an old voodoo5 3dfx card. When I upgraded my old computer to XP I downloaded new private party drivers for it .. the card works okay. I'm making my new computer for mostly for video editing. I don't think I would be playing any video games. I simply import the video using the pinnacle DV firewire card, and burn it on a DVD. Would I still need a good video card?

I have a P4-2533 Mhz/ 1Gig DDR-RAM/ MSI 845PE MAX2-FIR mobo. It's plenty fast in video editing, and I upgraded from a dual Athlon MP1800+! If you don't need to do a lot of multitasking, anything above 2,4 (533 FSB!!!) is fast! Just make sure you have at least 1Gig or RAM!!!

Dual Athlon MP 1800+ to a single P4 2533 is an upgrade for a video editing rig? Wow , are you sure you had the MP rig set up right?

🙂

Yup,

On the Duallie I could rip a DVD, burn CDs, browse the net and download stuff, do some photoediting all at the same time... without any significant slowdowns. This I cannot do on the P4 system. BUT, doing a single task is MUCH faster! Running only Avid or Winproducer/coder is faster on the P4 system! I run these systems side by side for a month.

And how important is the video card?

(Maybe I'll repeat my earlier question: I already have an old voodoo5 3dfx card. When I upgraded my old computer to XP I downloaded new private party drivers for it .. the card works okay. I'm making my new computer for mostly for video editing. I don't think I would be playing any video games. I simply import the video using the pinnacle DV firewire card, edit using studio, and burn it on a DVD. Would I still need a good video card?)

Is 1GB or RAM really going to help over 512MB? I have done some video editing when my system was an XP1500 with 512MB RAM. Now I have moved up to a P4 2.4b and 512MB but have not done any editing on the new system. Just curious.

Well a vid card that has quality 2D output is a must, So an ATI card or Matrox G450 or G550 would work.

Thanks guys!

Got P4 2.66 finally from googlegear for 239.50

No regrets (untill the credit card statement arrives) 😉
