so how do they refurb pcs? i mean whats the pc refurb process in terms of testing, replacing etc? i always see debranded hp/compaq systems and was wondering what are these machines put through before being resold?

they are probably just cleaned and tested.. if they work fine, no sense in changing anything... but i could be wrong 😛

A lot of machines are returned for PEBKAC problems so nothing needs done just cleaned and reboxed. Others need to have something replaced/repaired and checked by a standard pre-shipping test/burn-in process. That's it. It's 'caveat emptor' in any case. You pretty much have to depend on the quality of the people running the company that's selling it to you - so check their rep as much as possible. resellerratings.com is a good starting place - as if you didn't already know that...

There is no standard for what "refurb" means. It might not even include cleaning and testing, though I'd imagine most refurb sellers at least check that the PC powers up.

There is also manufacturer refurb vs. Joe's garage refurb, and Joe might not have the same diagnostic tools as Compaq.
