Whats the oldest video card you've enjoyed Quake 4 with?

I bought this game on its release date, and didnt try the single player until today.. wow I am impressed!

The Quake3 style multiplayer is definitely feeling dated to me. And I think I'm a Battlefield 2 multiplayer man from here on out. But its nice to have a final "swan song" in the deathmatch-style games like this.
I probably wont be buying the next Unreal Tournament due to my new feeling on deathmatching now.

I'm gaming on my 6800GT@1680x1050 and it runs great. Wondering if anyone is using a 9700 Pro or Geforce4, or maybe older and their thoughts.

There are benchmarks showing some of this, but I always felt there was a difference between what the FPS sheets show and how a given card "plays". Obviously minimum frame rates are a concern.

Or just post your thoughts on the game itself. I'm loving the single player, very immersive.
I wish I had a bassier set of headphones to use with this game, so I ordered a pair of Koss KSC35s (PortaPro drivers). The Sennheiser PC150s just dont have a lot of kick to them.

if it correlates well to d3 then my 9800 pro was very playable on 1024 high.

I'm not too far in the single player yet, but I'm liking what I've seen so far (as well as the multiplayer I've seen so far too). It's pretty playable at 16x10 (all settings on max except for AA which is way too slow) on my 6800GT, not as smooth as I'd like all the time, but that's the price I pay for sticking with an old $350 card for the moment. ;)

I know this is kinda OT for video, but I have to agree with you about the dated feeling of Quake3 (and Quake4) DM... IMO, the best deathmatch out there right now is HL2DM... I can't quite place why it's good, but I just really enjoy it. FEAR MP Deathmatch isn't bad either, but I don't really like the team player interface. I play at 1680x1050, and the team text/avatars are too small, which makes it hard to tell who's who. If anyone knows how to change the size of that somewhere, let me know.

hehe darn slow $350 video cards! :)
i think we are all getting spoiled with resolution, running cutting edge games at 1600x1200 which is not really a low rez. yet we kind of expect that.

i dont mind scaling down but thats the main reason i havent bothered to get a 2405fpw. going non-native is "ok" but still not as nice as native res.
believe me i want a 1920x1200 res screen. i think the screen is the most imporatnt part to a PC.. if i sacrificed anything.. i'd sacrifice having a nice LCD last!

havent tried yet, afraid my geforce 4 ti4600 will kill over :p if there was a demo out i would try.

i did finish doom 3 on it. everything on low, 1024 x 768 res and it ran like 25-26 fps average. played fine as long as there where no hordes of monsters (not counting the spider thingys) on my screen. funny thing is, if i was willing to accept a 12 fps average, with dips to 3, i could play on ultra quality :p just loaded everything into my RAM. and about 500 more megs o pagefile. but it ran.

For DM I vote for America's Army.

I haven't enjoyed Quake 4 yet. For DM, I prefer UT2004. It's the ony DM worth playing anyway.

HL2 Deathmath is very different from UT2k4's, but I like them both! I love the gravity gun in HL2 DM :D The problem is, there aren't many servers out there for HL2 DM, I guess the game isn't popular anymore. :(
I didn't like Fear multiplayer (played the demo); you die too easily. Sometimes I kill people by mistake. And it's not as precise as CS.
I haven't played Q4 yet; from the reviews it looks bad, but many people like it. I guess I'll just wait for the demo.

edit: oh, and I used to play D3 at 1600x1200 (high quality) and the framerates were around 30-40 FPS.

X800 XL, the same card I have now.

However I finished the Doom 3 expansion on a 6600 vanilla and it ran pretty good at 1024x768. I also finished Doom 3 the first time on a 9700 Pro.

I use 856x480 with x2aa on both my 6800gt and x800xt-pe, but then I am picky about low framerate so I do what i can to aviod it.

Plays absolutely great with my 9700Pro at 1024x768, Medium settings, EAX enabled. I don't use FSAA though. Like Doom3, I don't think FSAA is really needed with this engine.

Oddly enough, Q4 does not run correctly with my 128mb R8500 though. It plays, but the colors are completely off and there's strange green tint over everything. The only reason why I tried it with the R8500 is because Doom3 was actually very playable with it at 800x600 with it and I like testing with the older hardware to see what it can do.

My 9700pro screenshots for you. :p
Playing with one of the enemy.

These are at ...

10x7
ATi Cat 5.8's OGL settings on HQ
Game settings at HQ, AA x2, with ALL the advanced options YES (execpt VS)
I use some game config settings too.

My 3142 frame timedemo gives me 49 seconds at 64.1 fps
Time demo needs to be run more than once.
The pre-caching slows things down on 1st run.

The card is heavily modded ... futuremark has it as tha fastest air cooled 9700pro.

My 9800 is still going strong after 2.5 years..and in Quake 4 at 1024x768 res with all options on high I get great framerates. Far better framerates than Doom 3 in the same settings.

So far Call of Duty 2 and F.E.A.R. are the two games where I have no choice but to bring down lots of detail and use a lower res to get playable framerates (and CoD2 is simply unplayable in DX9 mode). I won't upgrade because of 2 games but it looks like I'm beginning to see the end of the 9800's use for modern games. Hey..over 2 and half years with the same card.. best videocard purchase I have ever made! ...sorry to get off topic.

That must have been an AWESOME Quake 4 slideshow. :) :)

OK. You all can beat me now because I have only SEEN other people play Q4.

I pre-ordered Q4, got my T-shirt ( wearing it now :lol ), got my game, but HAVEN'T had the time to actually blow the dust off of it and install it. :( Too busy with Half-Life 2 and Deathmatch. :)

i call BS ALL bumpmapping is DISABLED in those screenshots,....and look at the texture quality on the weapon model to say the least, let alone the enemy detail, and wall texture aspect......thats more quake2 in 640x480 type quality settings
