What's the noisest part in your computer?

my 3 LED 80mm fans when they're on. intake on front, exhaust on top and exhaust in back. They make my PC sound like its going to lift off. The two side fans I dont hear at all, they are wired to use 5 volts. My cpu fan is probably the loudest when thsoe 3 fans are off, but even then, its not too bad. my GPU fan is a regular 80mm fan that I glued directly on the heat sink since the stock one was driving me crazy (shot ball bearings) and believe it or not, the glue is holding, and it never melted. that fan is not too loud but I hear it.

Also, check your PSU fan, I've seen some PSU fans that sound like a jet engine. If its the case for you just get a 80mm fan and replace it. some soldering may be required. Dont touch the capacitors. well you can if you want, that way you know what to expect if you do touch them by accident.

One thing with fans though, 1 you will hardly hear, its when you got multiple together the sound adds up. So sometimes its not just 1 fan that's the culpit, but all of them put together.

My two 36GB raptors make this loud whine when booting up...and they whine when they do stuff....god it blows LOL.

The noisiest parts of my system are now probably the 80mm side fan, my GPU cooler, and my hard drive. My computer's been getting progressively quieter over the past year as I've replaced most of the noisier parts (screamin chipset cooler, stock AMD heatsink, Asspire 3 fan power supply), so it's at the point where I can't hear it without listening hard now.

Gotta be the hsf on the GPU. I don't know what the folks were thinking over at ATI, maybe they're all deaf. Considering replacing the cooler, but the P180 does a pretty good job of keeping things quiet. Also, the HSF on the CPU was a little noisy b4 I replaced it.

depends on the case. if you have a poorly made case no matter what you do your effort will be wasted. sound leaking out, resonating whine from harddrives etc. if youd on't have one already, get something like an antec p150/180.

Currently it's the POS grinding fan on my GPU. Sporatically, it will make a noise like something scraping against plasctic and the RPM drops down to what can only be 30 RPM. I need to go ahead and replace it, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Temperatures never go above 65 so I haven't been in too much of a hurry.

I have no clue. I have a Zalman CNPS9500 which is super quiet, a Zalman VF-700Cu which is super quiet, Asus a8n32sli deluxe which is completely silent (heatpipes), 2 120MM fans which are quiet, and an enermax liberty with a 120MM fan that spins at around 900rpm. I think the 120MM fan in the rear makes the most noise though, I exchanged the one that came in the case for a more powerful one because it wasn't moving the hot air out fast enough.

The noisiest part of my rig is my graphics card, but when it is spinning, my DVD drive is also pretty noisy.

I'm guessing that is the hard drive making the noise?

If it's only that noisy when it boots up and then it quiets down later then it's probably the DVD drive making the noise. I hear the same thing when mine boots up. The DVD drive always spins up when Windows starts. When the drive stops then my PC is nearly silent.

Same here, though I really only hear the GPU fan on startup. To be honest I really don't care, as I am generally wearing headphones and can't hear what is going on the room anyway.

Why not just disconnect each fan to see which it is. Just disconnect one fan, boot the system briefly (preferably after it's been off and cooled for a while), and see if the noise goes away. Voila.

my 425W pc power and cooling PSU, 5 80mm blue LED fans, the LOUDEST part of my system is my Thermaltake Venus 12 (sounds like a jet engine at full speed).

x800gto stock heatsink, it was right up there with the stock intel heatsink that met the trash.

I'm thinking about getting a silencer for it
