I think it's going to be smart phones, the industry (hardware & carriers) need to change their business models (we need bandwidth & people aren't going to be happy with a 2 year contract on a device that's outdated in 6 months...)

What do you think will be the next big thing?

WiMax?

?????

Smart phones have been around for a long time, it's not like they are new.

But yes, more bandwidth on cell phone internet usage would be awesome

Smart phones are finally pretty functional, they were miserable for a long time.

I've been using Nokia smart phones for years, with full internet browsers and full keyboards, they are damn near flawless in my experience.

I think the next big thing is already here.
Sprint/Nextel has a plan with a flat rate that gives you unlimited everything. Thats an ideal plan to have when you have a web phone.
Suspect most other carriers will follow soon.

I wish there were a sarcastic slow clap emoticon. Ya know, a graphical way to show that I'm REALLY REALLY proud of you.

Smartphones have been around for years, but they haven't been available/advertised/affordable to the masses, and the networks they ran on were terribly slow (still are really). They're only just becoming a mass market thing lately.

Just because LG (zomg LG, its so trendy/cool!!) finally made a working smartphone doesn't mean that they haven't been well made and working fine for years. They have been available, I bought my first one in an advertised deal through ATT wireless (the old one) in one of their stores for 100 dollars.

If that isn't "available/advertised/affordable" I don't know what is.

I do agree there needs to be a better network for internet usage though.

I've had smartphones for years too, and they were just fine and dandy. But they are becoming cheaper, available from more manufacturers, and better - with more mass-market features like dedicated media controls - which is why it's safe to say they can be considered "the next big thing" and not "something that's already here"

Yep, I had a Palm VIIX, it worked, but that's all it did, I've had a handful of HTC smartphones, (SDA, Dash, Wing) but they didn't get it right till WM 6 or 6.1 IMHO, I'm currently using an iPhone and it's pretty goddamn slick.

3G (or WiMax) makes them that much better, I can see the transition from desktop to notebook to smartphone with a dock & keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer being pretty cool...

That would be badass. With the way tech has been shrinking this could probably happen now.

The iPhone is cool too... my wife has one, it is a very clean and easy to use.
