What's the new hotness in PC gaming headsets?

I'm looking for a headset with a mic. I'm pretty interested in the G35, but it doesn't look like Logitech even makes it anymore. I went looking through headsets on the Logitech website and they're all retarded. What gives?

Who makes the new hotness in pc gaming headsets? Recommendations?

I'm looking for noise cancelling. The bigger the muff, the better. I prefer headsets that completely encase the ear, not just sit on top of it. I also need a boom mic, not a flexible mic.

Who's in the know? Knowledgify me.

Sennheiser uses an open back design on many of their headsets so they are more open sounding and less of the "sound is in your head" feeling of closed back. It's what I use. Sennheiser is a high end brand so you pay high end prices for their sets. The sound quality difference between Logitech and Sennheiser is night and day though. For nearly twice the price, it should be. I have the Sennheiser PC360 which is a stereo headset(it has been rebranded as the G4ME One headset). I am not a fan of surround headsets because I don't feel they offer the separation and spaciousness necessary for a true 5.1/7.1 experience like a quality set of speakers will. They do offer the PC363D which is a Dolby 7.1 surround headset. They also have a closed back set in the G4ME Zero headset(this is stereo). Instead of an open back they have steel grids placed where the open mesh would be in order to isolate you from the outside a bit more. All their sets have a noise cancelling microphone that self mutes when you tilt it up and click it in place. They do also offer some lower end options as well and all of them are fully circumaural so they completely cover your ears.

I'm a big fan of Sennheiser headphones. I love their sound...it's somewhat unique and very pleasant to listen to. They are built exceptionally well and are super comfortable with plenty of padding on the earcups and headband. I have worn my headset for well over 2 hours and never felt like I needed a break or got tired of them. I feel like my PC360s will last a very long time as well. The kicker is their higher end headsets start at $250 which might eliminate them as an option for some people on a budget. The PC360 I use are available from amazon for $166 currently since it has been replaced with a new model. I paid $225 for mine last year. The bonus IMO is the higher end Sennheiser headsets use the same drivers and sound signature as some of their audiophile grade headphones for music with slightly different frequency response and impedance levels. They are fantastic for just listening to music as well.

Budget is critical. What is it? You want run of the mill best buy quality, or do you want a step up?

That or the PC360 or similar.

I just replaced my aging G35 with the beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80ohm cans with a cheap Zalman clip on mic. It clips on to the headphones cord and works just fine for a mic. Can't tell you how much better this sounds than the G35. I paired it with a SoundBlaster ZxR.

The G35 served me well for years though and now can be found for about $80.00.

I Sennheiser. I use the Sennheiser PC350's currently for the past 2 years now I think and love them. I have an older pair of Sennheiser HD280PRO that are great as well, only reason I purchased the PC350's was simply because I wasn't happy with any of the add on mic options for headsets and I use TS/Vent a lot.

I've got the Logitech G930. Love that headset. The wireless works really well and it does a great job on the surround delivery. I get about 30-40 feet of range depending what's in between. Just make sure to change your routers default wireless channel so it doesn't interfere (think 11 caused issues for me. Put to one and no interference)

Battery life is about 8 hours of continual use in surround mode. About 10-11 not in surround mode (I always leave mine enabled)

I also don't notice any lag in sound delivery compared to what I see. It's been phenomenal for me. Found it on sale for $99 but having used it I would purchase for regular price in a heartbeat if they died. Mine are about 18 months old.

+1 on the G930 headset. I have had mine for almost 2 years and love the sound quality. For the price they are tough to beat. I have been able to use them for long sessions with no comfort issues. I am talking 3-4 hours at a time. Sometimes longer.

Modmic + headphones is about the best option. Beyerdynamic also have a pair of headsets coming out (one open and one closed) which are based on their high headphones (DT770's I believe) but which include a good quality directional mic. I don't know when they intend to release them but they might also be an option.

I did have a pair of Sennheiser PC360's and personally I wasn't all that impressed with the binaurial impact of them. They lacked accuracy for surround sound but I found that the HD 598's really gave me what I was looking for in terms of quality and the modmic made it a reasonable headset which is what I currently use.

I just spent 10 hours with mine on working on a work project listening to pandora. Took them off for about 10 minutes when I got a snack and threw them on the charger for that time then they went right back on.

Great headset if it fits your budget. Glad to hear another positive review. Most people claim the wireless is crap and won't try them.

I have the G930 as well. It is a good gaming headset, but you might have to disable your onboard sound to get it to work right. Took me forever to figure that out. When onboard sound is enabled you might get constant crackling and popping through the headset. Disabling it gets rid of the crackle, but does not otherwise affect the headset's performance.

The G35 is very uncomfortable for me. I have a large head and it is created for those with a smaller noggin. So if you use large sized helmets or anything, don't get it!!! I gave it away because I didn't like it at all. Sounded ok, not spectacular, but so uncomfortable.

So it NEEDS a sound card? Cripes, I haven't used a sound card in YEARS.

The hotness is get an awesome regular headset and then order a ModMic.

This. Don't get an overpriced crappy "gaming headset". I makes a lot more sense to buy a really high-quality pair of headphones, and then get a standalone mic to use with it. It took me a while to figure this out but I'm better off for it.

There are models that are basically high end headphones wrapped in a package that includes a quality mic. Sennheiser and Beyerdynamic are the two that come to mind.

I have the Plantronics GameCom Pro 1's from over a decade ago and love them - they're discontinued and the mic seemed to break recently though.

Great sound and lightweight very comfortable.

I'd also bought the Plantronics Commander limited edition. They're list price $300 and were on sale for $70. They're heavy, closed headphones. The sound is 'perfectly fine', but I don't care for it quite as much as the others. The mic is very good, and the build quality very good.

But the comfort and design are very bad. After a while they're causing a very sore ear, and they can't be adjusted well because the adjuster is just a little wire that they slide right back on. They include those hard wires in a location that they can press on your head.

They come with a Dolby box built in to the cord, but it just makes the game sounds sound like they're a few feet away - it sounds worse.

I've ordered a replacement of the earlier Gamecom's off ebay where they're still for sale.

I also have the G930's and Syberia II's, but they're still in the box.

Also some pairs of normal headphones, also still in the box.

It's hard to beat the Plantronics GameCom [Pro] 1's.

No, it does not need a sound card. In fact, it works better with the onboard sound (mobo based sound) disabled. I do not have a separate sound card and have not used one in years.

Sennheiser doesn't have great options in the higher end, I think the 350s are really about as good as you can go. Beyer Dynamics are grossly overpriced. it's like $250 headphones with a mic attached for $400. Wut? I'm sure the mic is waaaaaay better than anything else you can get, but how good a mic do you really need for voice chat?
