What's the name of this short story (novel?)

It's set after WW1 and the guy is in a basket because he is deaf, mute, blind, and has little or no body control. He eventually uses his head tics to say "kill me" over and over again. His soldier friends figure it out and tell the doctors, but they don't kill him. There was some old movie adapted from it, clips of which are in a Metallica video (One, I think).
