I'm making $13.50/hr plus about $550/mo for housing. Works out to about $17/hr. OT is 1.5x base, or 2x base if you work two days on the weekend. They don't encourage overtime though. I pay about $30 out of pocket each month to live in a nice 2 bedroom apartment with cable TV/internet/washer/drier.
After a few more weeks, I go on salary and get as much as a $3/hr raise. I'll be expected to work more than 40hrs a week, but I do that anyway now.
I certainly don't sit around, I'm busy most of the time. Waiting on my boss to go over some test results now before I continue on with it.
This is about midrange as far as pay goes. Government jobs (NASA) pay less, some companies like Air Products pay a lot more. I interviewed with the EPA, I'd have been making $6.75/hr there.

I manage all the interns at a HVAC company. I'm basically the head intern. I've been working at the company since I was 15. Started in sheet metal and worked my way up to AC Design.
